I have a Quantum FireBall 17Gb on by primary UDMA master (ide2). I have configured the 
drive to be UDMA 1.
I did 'cp -var /usr/* /mnt/hd2' on 4 terminals simultaniously (no other procs). Works 
nice...

haven't tried 'cp -a /dev/hdeX /dev/hdeY' though.
