Hmm, Redhat installed an SMP kernel by default for me.

Andre's IDE patches for HPT366 support are needed if you want to run disks,
on the UDMA 66 controller. He should also check the BIOS is QQ beta or
later, for running with dual CPUs.

Since then I've moved onto Debian 2.2 which comes with a kernel patch for
ATA100, and a suitable prebuilt kernel, which is nice, though you _do_ need
to recompile there to enable SMP.

SuSE may have had less of the infamous lock up problems, than Redhat 6.x,
but that's just a vague impression based on past posts to the list. I think
Andre keeps them up to date with IDE stuff ;)

An advantage of RH 7.0 is the claimed 2.4 kernel readiness, many reports on
the list have mentioned 2.4test serious kernels, which advance SMP, and
they're getting nearer and nearer release readiness. The known bug list is
at Source forge if you want to look into 2.4.
