hardware?
At that time Promise did a ATA-66 card with hardware RAID derivative, for
RAID levels, 0 and 1, though there may have been a RAID 10 possibility.
There was a cheat out on the net, to get the normal version to do the RAID,
as it was the same card, but with one jumper block or resistor missing, or
some similar scheme. I know 2 guys who did this, and it did work.
I'd be somewhat dubious about running RAID5 with 4 disks on 2 channels, as
each disk would block the other on the same channel, though Andre Hedrik did
once make an intriguing hint on this list about developing use of something
which sounded like an IDE equivalent of SCSI disconnect as a project he was
working on...
Thinking of which, I had a look through the IDE patch, and looked at all the
special code Andre has put in for the HPT366... I think we're rather lucky
he had a BP6 or it would just not have happened. Looks like he must have
had great fun, NOT! There's just so many special hacks for bad drives and
stuff like setting up interrupts differently, undocumented modes etc etc.
Will see if my BP6 remains stable with both drives on the HPT tonight.
