thermal is one way. electrons can also be raised above the band gap
by absorption of photons.

That's what they teach in Electrical Engineering 305: Semiconductor
Devices, at Purdue University. Considering that the prof who wrote
the textbooks used in that course actually worked with Schockly when
Schockly was still a prof acroos the mall in the Physics building,

Quantitative?
I haven't worked any of these equations in over a decade.
Hell, I don't even *KNOW* what boxes to look in to find the
text books which cover that material.
However, a simple search for "electron effective mass semiconductor"
brings up numerous pages with the calculus equations for determining m*.
For me to type them up here would prove nothing other than that I
can use several lines and various ascii characters to write out
an integral equation with embedded fractions in a pure ascii medium
such as this.
