I recall MS handing out dev tools free at schools while IBM (viewing
it as another source of retinue) was charging 500$ with a student
discount.

Indeed. I used OS/2 for a while and liked it a lot. There is a project
that lets you run Win32 apps under Warp or better which keeps the
platform usable (unlike Amiga).

Big deal. You don't have the SuperBowl. Are those tin cans you drive around in
called
"cars"? Here in America we call them go-carts. Yes, you do have television, but it's
really crappy. Not only that, but you boil all your food until there's no taste left,
and you all have really bad teeth. Do you have dentists over there? Even your most
famous citizen, Austin Powers, has bad teeth. Here in America, everyone has bright
white teeth, big TV sets for watching great shows like Opra and Jerry Springer, Ford
Excursions for going 1 mile to get a big juicy Wopper at Burger King...and, of course,
the SuperBowl.

Just a little bit more on the connection between classical liberalism and modern
liberalism, via John Stuart Mill. In Lyman Tower Sargent's book "Contemporary
Political Ideologies" (1999, Harcourt Brace), he writes on page106-07 that "The
other approach developed in the late 19th century and early 20th centuries in the
writings of T.H. Green and others, who argued that some people need help in order to
be able to exercise their liberty. This argument was the beginning of what became
known as welfare liberalism."

The key: modern liberalism emerges from Lockean and classical liberal thought with
an emphasis on individuality and liberty, with government needed to try to secure
that. That is very different from collectivist socialism that denied private
property or looked to big government to equalize material outcomes.

Sargent's chapter starting on page 41 on the "Principles of Democracy" also explain
what democracy is (and how it is not inconsistent with having a Republic). I still
recommend Barber's book for a more full analysis of what democracy is, but Sargent's
book compares well with Thobaben and Funderburk (the most 'simple' of the examples
offered) and Leon Baradat's.

Doesn't Solaris run on Intel? Why would the hardware be cheaper? Low
system requirements? Miniscule, if even true.

They are probably immigrants. As you know, immigrants is just a code word

other.

ATM as in Automated Teller Machine???? If u mean this then I have to

Automated Teller Machines running on MS-Windows!!!! Years ago I even saw an

Someone countered my "crash daemon" by saying that if you expect the
system to fail, then it hasn't *really* crashed.

If I open up Netscape and point it at an HTML page that has a
JavaScript in it to reload the same page in a new window, Netscape
will crash (fairly quickly!). This is expected behaviour (expected by
me, anyway), but I would still call it a crash.

I also know that I can kill Win98 by a careful combination of
connecting by WinModem to the net, forcibly killing (by alt-ctrl-del)
the dialer and then checking my mail with Netscape. It works almost
without fail and the only way to recover is by hitting reset. I think
even Gates himself wouldn't count this as a "feature". It's a crash,
although totally expected by myself, given the number of times I've
had to kill the MS dialer because it was hanging.

But you're talking about crashing applications. I think the thread was
discussing crashing the OS. There is a big difference. There are articles
that explain a modification you can make to Win 2K to force a BSOD.
On a Linux system you can execute: 'shutdown -h now', but I wouldn't
call that a crash...it's just stopping the OS.
