Ahh, so the system is "secure" because it's impossible for people to write
their own self-contained programs. Yeah, that really restores my
confidence.

Hint: Win2K does *not* let normal users burn CDs with its default
settings. Like Eric said, the administrator has to give users permission
to load the ASPI driver. Thank goodness people like you don't actually
write software... *glances at IE5 and LookOut* oh, wait...

So you think most women that call themselves feminists

Or do you just have a reading comprehension problem (along

Tried running WinAmp? It's a bit less of a resource hog than Media
player.

You know, the two Linux distro's I've been using (Mandrake and SuSE)
both install a file indexer which runs after booting. Unfortunately, you
can notice the effect of it running - the whole system feels sluggish.
And that's a simple file indexer.

Until, of course, you consider the desktop. At which point the picture

I pay for a lot of software tools (not VisualWorks yet, but Common LISP,
Prolog, SuSE Linux distros, Windows 2000 uprade). I also need to be
frugal, but I balance that against having high quality development tools.
I have seen programmer productivity reports that seem to indicate that
programmers using a good Smalltalk environment (like VisualWorks, or
IBM's VisualAge for Smalltalk - which is what they wrote VisualAge
for Java in!) are twice as productive as Java programmers (which is
mostly how I earn my living, BTW); I would extrapolate this to indicate
that a good Smalltalk environment might be 4 times as productive as
a C++ environment.  (I spent years using C++, wrote 5 C++ books, and
I think that it takes twice as long to design and build a complex system
in C++ as it does in Java).

BTW, there is an EXCELLANT free open source SmallTalk that runs
great on Linux: Squeak (www.squeak.org), that is a lot of fun. Give that
a try!

BTW, part 2: you can always use VisualWorks for free as long as
it is for non-commercial purposes.

So I am assuming that your no longer "terrified". Hopefully your terror has
now been downgraded to "disturbed" by the knowlege that a user would have to
sit down and hand code his own software in his determination to burn a CD on
a system with no burning software installed? Art least with some sedatives
you may finally be able to sleep at night now. I see that happen all the
time BTW. It's becoming the scourge of the industry! Those damn users who
have taken to writing their own software because their admin has set them up
with a burner and there is no software installed. We should all call the DOJ
and see what they are going to do about it!

Hint: I already tried it and I *can* burn CD's as a "user" with default user
settings. I didn't do anything except install the CDRWin software, create a
new user, log in as that user and burn a CD.
