I'm not sure if I've got the total gist of this... but the Sysadmin is
responsible for doing the risk analysis for the system. The risk
analysis is to take into account for fires, floods, earthquakes, etc.
The procedure is to have sane alternate locations of data storeage
outside the possible risk area.

Interesting. I assume you're using '98; in '95 the transfer seems to
have no restriction so perhaps they made it more restrictive over time.
This is from the OEM License.txt for '95 (the 1000-character-long lines
are annoying to read in Notepad but I wrapped it below):
"* Software Transfer. You may permanently transfer all of your rights
under this EULA only as part of a sale or transfer of the COMPUTER,
provided you retain no copies, you transfer all of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT
(including all component parts, the media and printed materials, any
upgrades, this EULA and, if applicable, the Certificate(s) of
Authenticity), AND the recipient agrees to the terms of this EULA. If
the SOFTWARE PRODUCT is an upgrade, any transfer must include all prior
versions of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT."
So if you sell your COMPUTER you'll have to carefully extract out all of
your personal files from the your periodic back-up tapes then destroy
them. Oops, you shouldn't have made those periodic back-ups in the first
place:
"* OEM Back-up Utility. If PC Manufacturer has not included a back-up
copy of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT with the COMPUTER, you may use the
Microsoft back-up utility, if included with the SOFTWARE PRODUCT, to
make a single back-up copy of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT. You may use the
back-up copy solely for archival purposes. After the single back-up
copy is made, the backup utility will be permanently disabled."
Now, it seems to me anyone with common sense would want to make periodic
back-ups of their COMPUTER's disk. But the license seems to say you can
only do this once during the lifetime of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT, and even
then only with their "OEM Back-up Utility", which then self-destructs to
make sure you don't do it again.

That's an interesting thought, but since vi documentation is more
widely available than ever before, I don't understand it.
I agree vi is weird and hard to understand, but that's not my problem.
Lots of good things are weird and hard to understand.
Think of vi as being like a manual transmission in a car. It requires
you to interact with the car in a way that is unfamiliar, and it's more
difficult to learn at first because it really isn't as simple to use.
Or think of it as like a guitar. Did you ever try to play the guitar?
The first several months are spent thinking, "This is stupid. My
fingers will never contort like that. People who play the guitar are
insane." But in time, it starts to make sense to you in a weird way,
and after that, you just play.
Of course, some people will never want to drive a stick shift or play
the guitar, and that's fine with me. But I like both of the above, and
using vi too.

She could, but when my uncle set up his old computer at her house, she
told him to come take it away, because she didn't have any need to have
a computer in her house. However, I have no doubt that if she wanted
to learn, she'd have no trouble at all learning vi. But then, I have a

Huh?

Assuming you're talking about Bill Gates, it always seemed to me like
he was fascinated with telling _himself_ who's boss. If he wants to
tell me who's boss, he can try, but the fact is that so far in my
lifetime, I have made a net profit off of Microsoft products. (Ten or
twelve years ago, I won a Microsoft compiler in a contest. I turned
around and sold it, and since then I have never bought a Microsoft
product.)

Neither was Windows until Windows 95 (except substitute 1995 for 1994).
I'll bet Win 3.1 and Linux were about on par WRT quality from 1992-1994.
