Just compiled a 2.1.131 kernel, and the sound finally appears to be working, except there doesn't seem to be a way to control the volume :( I use volume on i386, and attempted to compile it on the alpha, with a bit of tweaking it compiled ok, but it reports the volume as 234 or such, and it should only be 5 < volume < 95, and any attempts to change it fail (it's still really loud).
