=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
I'm pleased to announce the release of version 1.2.5 of LEAP.
Briefly, LEAP is a free RDBMS that is used as an educational tool in
Universities around the world to aid the students as they learn database
theory.
Full details are available on the LEAP web page:
http://www.dogbert.demon.co.uk/leap.html
LEAP is entirely free (it is distributed under the terms of the GNU
General Public License), and is very easy to install. All distributions
contain the full 'C' source code. Versions exist for all Unix
implementations (including Linux), and recently a Windows 95/NT GUI has
been developed. Full documentation is, of course, included in the
distribution.
New features in this release include:
* A 'compact' operator to reclaim the space wasted in tuples
after multiple update/delete commands
* A modified 'list' operator to include the 'updated' and 'temporary'
status flags from leaprel.
* System relations are kept more accurate as relations change.
* A large number of bugs have been fixed
* A significant memory leak has been resolved.
* Update operator is fully documented.
LEAP can be downloaded from the SunSite archive, and the Demon FTP
server:
ftp://ftp.demon.co.uk/pub/compsci/databases/leap/leap-1.2.5.tar.gz
ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/Incoming/leap-1.2.5.tar.gz (now)
ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/apps/database/relational (when placed)
The web site includes links to these, and other web sites where LEAP is
mirrored.
Regards,
Richard Leyton.

Subject: POC v2 - translate Objective-C to Smalltalk-80
Date: Thu, 7 Jan 1999 01:27:53 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
The Portable Object Compiler (POC) is a set of Objective-C libraries and
an Objective-C to C translator (generates plain C code).
New, in version 2, is that the C code-generation independent parts of the
translator have been reused for an option (-st80) to generate Smalltalk-80
code instead of (or in addition to) C.
The program is available from Sunsite mirrors such as
ftp://ftp.uni-rostock.de/Linux/sunsite/devel/lang/objc/
(it consists of two packages; you have to start with the bootstrap
package, as indicated in the .LSM file)

Subject: LOCAL: Worcester (MA, USA) Linux Users' Group Meeting
Date: Thu, 7 Jan 1999 01:35:01 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Hi everybody,
The next meeting of WLUG (Worcester, MA, USA Linux Users' Group) is
scheduled for Wednesday, January 20th, 1999 in the usual place at 7 PM.
(The usual place is on the WPI campus in Worcester, in a building called
Salisbury Labs, in a lecture hall called Kinnicutt on the first floor).
Directions to the meeting can be found on the group web page:
http://rob.acol.com/~wlug
For this meeting, the topic of discussion will be:
"How to Build your Own Kernel"
This meeting will be geared toward users unfamiliar with how and why to
build a kernel, (or for that matter, just what *is* a "kernel"). Topics
covered will include kernel building, the pros and cons of kernel
modules, copying the kernel to a floppy for testing, and other related
topics as they arise. The plan is to use the overhead projector
connected to the computer to show off a graphical kernel building tool
("make xconfig" or maybe "make menuconfig").
Light refreshments will be served. A small donation ($2 - $3) is
requested to cover the cost of refreshements. There will also be some
items raffled (no cost). Post meeting "refreshments" will be available
at the Boynton Restaurant - all are welcome!
Looking forward to seeing you at our next meeting!
Andy Stewart
