Subject: SFI Director - New GPL System Management Tool for UNIX
Date: Sun, 10 Jan 1999 00:39:54 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
The SFI Director is a tool for managing distributed, hetergeneous UNIX
Systems. Its functionality includes System Configuration, Application
Distribution, NIS & NIS+ Management, and User Management and Dynamic System
Documentation. Currently in Version 3, it is in service at a number of
customer sites, to manage networks of 50 to 200+ UNIX nodes, under Solaris,
Digital UNIX, HP-UX, Red Hat and SuSE Linux.
Version 3.0 introduces a new distribution Algorithm, which substantially
improves the flexibility, reliability and documentability of the
distribution process. Furthermore, an install script is available which
substantially simplifies the installation under Red Hat Linux 5.2 as well
as Solaris 2.5.1, HP-UX 10.01 and SuSE Linux 5.3.
To everyone who tries it out: Enjoy! We look forward to you comments and
contributions.

We have posted the i386.rpm, src.rpm, and patches on our WWW site at
http://www.affinity-systems.ab.ca/software/ for sendmail-8.9.2-2. These
should work on Redhat 5.0, 5.1, and 5.2 but were compiled under Redhat 5.1
Please send bug reports to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Here is information on the package:
cafe:bash# rpm -qi sendmail
Name : sendmail Distribution: Redhat
Version : 8.9.2 Vendor: Affinity Systems Inc.
Release : 2 Build Date: Thu Jan 7 10:49:15 1999
Install date: Thu Jan 7 11:20:41 1999 Build Host: cafe.affinity-systems.ab.ca
Group : Daemons Source RPM: sendmail-8.9.2-2.src.rpm
Size : 2256323
Packager : Affinity Systems Inc. <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
URL : http://www.affinity-systems.ab.ca/software/
Summary : sendmail mail transport agent
Description :
Sendmail is a Mail Transport Agent, which is the program
that moves mail from one machine to another. Sendmail implements a
general internetwork mail routing facility, featuring aliasing and
forwarding, automatic routing to network gateways, and flexible
configuration.
If you need the ability to send and receive mail via the internet
you'll need sendmail.
and the changelog:
cafe:bash# rpm -q --changelog sendmail
* Thu Jan 07 1999 James Bourne <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
- - backed out the apache accept patch as accept is handled differently and
(according to the release info) this should fix the DOS attack resulting for
sendmail sleeping for 5 seconds after a bad accept. This release includes
the patch for mime buffer overflows as well. If it still causes problems
due to the accept handling we will merge the apache accept patch back in.
- - changed install script of spec file to create /var/spool/mqueue and
..hoststat with mail ownerships and mode 700. This is wanted and needed if
people set the RunAsUser in sendmail.cf to the default mail user (mail
8:12) which is much safer then running sendmail as user root. This should
help with certain security concerns.
- - modified the default sendmail.cf to set RunAsUser to mail. Change this if
needed to a different UID. Also changed DefaultUser to an equal number, now
it is 8:12 (these are redhat 5.1 default uid/gid for user mail).
- - dropped MaxDaemonChildren down to 40 in the default sendmail.cf. This
should help wee ppp sites like ours as they may not be able to handle 80
children that easily... Bump this value up in the file
/usr/doc/sendmail-8.X.X/cf/cf/asi-redhat.mc and remake with M4 to change it.
- - mail spool directory (/var/spool/mail) changed to root.root mode 1777.
This is for local delivery with procmail, and mail pickup with some pop
servers such as cucipop. In these cases, the spool file is locked, copied
to a lock file (for pop), and then read etc all the while running as that
user instead of a privledged account. Mail boxes can then be kept mode 600.
- - changed ownership of /etc/aliases to be mail mode 644 as to do
AutoRebuilds this file must be writable by the sendmail daemon running as
user mail.
- - tightened permissions on suid files /usr/libexec/mail.local and
/usr/sbin/sendmail to 4511
* Tue Jan 05 1999 James Bourne <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
- - Updated to sendmail-8.9.2 and rebuilt RPM.
* Mon Nov 16 1998 James Bourne <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
- - Applied sendmail-8.9.1a patch which fixes mime buffer overflows in some
mail clients
* Sun Aug 23 1998 James Bourne <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
- - Fixed typos in access file
- - Added CW file
- - Fixed aliases file
* Fri Jul 10 1998 James Bourne <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
- - Added accept patch. This uses the accept errno handling from apache
1.2.6 which I'm told is good.
Regards,
Jim

Subject: BUG FIX for HotWire EasyFAX - you need this
Date: Sat, 9 Jan 1999 23:04:06 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
HotWire EasyFAX bug fix!
We've fixed a bug in the text conversion engine that causes it to
fail sending ascii pages, attachments or faxes in the QuickFax
window pane.
Please download a small binary (4k) at ftp.product.com/edw/atops.
This will fix the problem. You must install the new binary on top
of the old binary in /usr/local/hotwire/bin.
Alternatively, you could download it off the web site
at http://www.unisrc.com/freeversions.htm. Its the last item on
that page. You will need to unzip it "gunzip atops.gz" and copy it on
top of /usr/local/hotwire/bin/atops. You will need to be superuser
to do this.
Our apologies for the snafu.
HotWire EasyFAX maintenance team.

Dartmouth College, in Hanover, New Hampshire. Directions to the Rockefeller
Center conference hall can be found at

people...but word of mouth, and the popularity of Linux may drastically
increase this number to 400 or more...so plan to arrive early!
Directions to this event will be posted at
http://www.nnh.net/nnhlug/meetings.htm .!!!! So check there often until the
date of the event...
The meetings adgenda (this is all subject to change) is 'roughly' as
follows, Please be ONTIME, as A LOT of doorprizes will be handed out:
4pm ~ People arrive. (be sure to get your info pack!)
4:10pm ~ Brief intoduction of NNHLUG members.
4:15pm ~ First Door Prizes drawn.

6:15pm ~ Time to chat with others...
6:30pm ~ Meeting ends. (We have the place till 7pm...)
There is a tentative plan to find a place where NNHLUG members (and anyone
else) can get something to eat, and perhaps a beer (or two). This could be
decided on the fly...after the meeting...
But stay tuned here for further upates...
Our guest speaker will be Jon "Maddog" Hall. The extensive abstract for the
talk:
"The ten reasons why you can't use Linux, and the ten reasons why those ten
reasons are crap!
Trying to convince your boss/professor/legislator to use Linux? This is the
talk for you. It investigates the reasons that people feel they can not use
Linux, and discusses whether those reasons are correct, overstated, or just
plain wrong. It helps to eliminate the FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt) of
using a Linux Operating System. Discussions of cost of ownership will also
be presented."
Jon "maddog" Hall is a Senior Manager in Compaq's Digital UNIX(R) Software
Group. Jon has been in the UNIX group for sixteen years as an engineer,
Product Manager and Marketing Manager. Prior to Digital, Jon was a Senior
Systems Administrator in Bell Laboratories' UNIX group, so he has been
programming and using UNIX for over 20 years.
In addition to Jon's work with Digital UNIX, Jon is also Executive Director
of Linux(R) International, a non-profit vendor organization dedicated to
promoting the use of Linux, a freely distributable re-implementation of the
UNIX operating system. Digital was the first system vendor to join Linux
International, and Compaq Computer Corporation is a Corporate Sponsoring
Member. Jon is directly responsible for the port of Linux to the Alpha
processor.
Jon started his career programming on large IBM mainframes in Basic Assembly
Language, but his career improved dramatically when he was introduced to
Digital's PDP-11 line of computers as chairman of the Computer Science
Department at Hartford State Technical College. There he spent four glorious
years teaching students the value of designing good algorithms, writing good
code, and living an honorable life. He has also been known to enjoy
discussing aspects of computer science over pizza and beer with said
students.
maddog (as his students named him, and as he likes to be called) has his MS
in Computer Science from RPI, his BS in Commerce and Engineering from Drexel
University, and in his spare time is writing the business plan for his
retirement business:

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
- ---------------Blender for Linux Alpha------------------------
A note for owners of the fastest PC's around: now you can feed your beast
with the coolest free 3D software around! Starting today, Blender for Linux
Alpha is available for download at the Blender website.
The first (beta) version is dynamically linked with Mesa 3.0, and needs
Linux libc6 libraries to run.
- ------------------------Blender-------------------------------
Blender is the free distributed 3D package - currently available for
SGI, Sun Solaris, Alpha Linux and i386 Unix PC's - that has become very
popular with students, artists and at universities.
Developed as in-house software of a high quality animation studio, it has
proven to be an extremely fast and versatile design instrument.
In fact, Blender is a complete 3D suite which you can use to create TV
commercials, to make technical visualizations, business graphics, to do
some morphing, or design user interfaces. Thanks to its object oriented
structure you can easily build and manage complex environments.
The renderer is reliable and extremely fast.
All basic animation principles are well implemented.
Visit the Blender site for more information.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Highly Portable Editor Core Library (HPECL)
- ---------------------------------
Anyone interested in working on a highly portable editor core library
written in C, please email me at mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED].
Project goals:
- --------------
To produce a very portable editor core library that can be used in any
future Text editor or Word processor projects, and ease development of
these type of projects. The edit core will not be dependent on any OS,
or Windowing system etc. The Edit core library and supporting
libraries,
will be released under the GPL license.
Project Status:
- ---------------
I have written a lot of the supporting libraries that will be needed by
the core library. These include a easy to use linked list library, and
many string manipulation functions and others needed for the library.
I have also written a simple (very) test fixture for the library also.
Things to do:
- -------------
- Setup a Web page, email list, chat schedule, and assign coding
areas.
- Discuss/Plan current and future features.
- Continue on with the coding of the Edit core and supporting
libraries.
- Write a test Editor and Word processor for library example usage and
testing.
Anyone wanting to join in on this project, please email me at
mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED].

It is proper to take alarm at the first experiment on our
liberties. We hold this prudent jealousy to be the first duty of
citizens and one of the noblest characteristics of the late
Revolution. The freemen of America did not wait till usurped power had
strengthened itself by exercise and entangled the question in
precedents. They saw all the consequences in the principle, and they
avoided the consequences by denying the principle. We revere this
lesson too much ... to forget it
