[Please feel free to pass this to anyone you think may be interested.]

There will be a STNYLUG (Southern Tier of New York Linux User Group)
meeting held January 19, 1999 at the Pizza Hut on State Route 17C (Main
Street) in Endicott, NY, USA.

The meeting will be an informal session with the addition of a 15 minute
talk entitled "Perl on the commandline: your one-way ticket to
administrative Nirvana".

This talk is the first in line of experimental talks where we will try to
learn something without actually having a computer in front of us and
while being in an environment not exactly conducive to structured talks
(i.e. in a restaurant). Your patience is appreciated. We are also
soliciting more appropriate venues for future meetings.

The rest of the session will be the same old thing: laughing, eating, and
talking about all things computer, especially about Linux and Open Source
software.

Bring your laptop/hand-held/UltraSparc if you have a Perl interpreter
installed on it! Come with ideas for future LUG activities, or with
problems you are having with your home/work system!

The current location for the STNY LUG web site can be seen here:

        http://home.stny.lrun.com/avatar/LUG

Linux is a trademark of Linus Torvalds. UltraSparc is a trademark of Sun
Microsystems. Open Source is definitely a service mark of someone, but of
who remains to be seen. Perl probably should be a trademark of someone.
I'll take it if no one else wants it :)

[I (Russell Marks) don't have net access any more, but Steven has been
kind enough to upload/post on my behalf.]

Vmanpg is an svgalib-based man page viewer which should work on all
VGA cards. It displays man pages such that they look pretty much like
they do in `xman'.

Here's the LSM entry:

- --------------------------- cut to the chase -----------------------------
Begin3
Title: Vmanpg
Version: 1.0
Entered-date: 29APR98
Description: Vmanpg is an svgalib-based pager designed for viewing
man pages, which shows them in much the same way as
`xman'. It uses the mono 640x480 mode, and should work
on all VGA cards. It supports only a subset of the
keys/commands supported by `less' but all the most
                commonly-used ones are available.

Subject: instmon 1.4 - an installation monitoring program
Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 01:26:31 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

I would like to announce version 1.4 of instmon. Although instmon has
been publicly available for a few months, this is the first announcement
on c.o.l.a.

instmon (INSTall MONitor) is a program that monitors installations of
various programs/packages and detects the files that were added to the
filesystem or modified by the installation procedure. To achieve this, the
user/system administrator has to run it twice for each installation: once
before, when it records the current timestamp, and once after it, when it
searches the filesystem with find(1) for all files whose status has
changed after the recored timestamp.

While this approach may seem a bit primitive and error-prone, instmon
has a few features to ensure that it records only the correct information.
In particular, the user can explicitly specify which directories should be
searched, and she can also specify directories that should be excluded
from the detection process. In fact, instmon's default exclusion list
should be adequate for most cases.

instmon can also act upon the log files it creates. In particular, it
can do the following:

  - List logs on standard output (it's more useful than it sounds).
  - Automatically create .tar, .deb, or .rpm packages.
  - Remove the files that a log contains from the filesystem.
  - Incrementally compare the logs for different versions of the same
    package.
  - Cleanup the files left from previous versions of a package.

instmon is a shell script. Although I have developed it on Linux, it
should be able to run on most systems with a Bourne shell and some basic
UNIX tools. It can be found in the following locations:

  ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/admin/
  ftp://hal.csd.auth.gr/pub/linux/instmon/

I'm open to suggestions, comments or constructive criticism, if you have
any.

Subject: Z81 1.0 - ZX81 emulator - released (ages ago)
Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 01:29:37 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

[I (Russell Marks) don't have net access any more, but Steven has been
kind enough to upload/post on my behalf.]

Z81 is a Sinclair ZX81 emulator. (The US equivalent was the Timex
TS1000.) The ZX80 can also be emulated. There are actually three
versions - Z81 (svgalib), xz81 (for X), and Z81txt (for any text-mode
Linux console - it'll even work on MDA/CGA/EGA).

The big addition in v1.0 is, as you might have gathered by now :-),
ZX80 support.

Here's the LSM entry:

- --------------------------- cut to the chase -----------------------------
Begin3
Title: Z81
Version: 1.0
Entered-date: 31MAR98
Description: Z81/Z81txt/xz81 are ZX81 (TS1000) and ZX80 emulators
for (respectively) svgalib, text mode, and X. They
                load/save Xtender-format .P files, and support the
                ZX81's pseudo-hi-res mode. A few ZX81-related utils,
GIFs of the keyboard layout, and two PD tetris clones
                are included.
Though I (rjm) wrote Z81 etc., I give Ian main author
credit as I used his Z80 emulation (from his excellent
`xz80' ZX Spectrum emulator), which is the most
difficult bit, not to mention being half the code. :-)
(Please don't contact Ian in relation to Z81; I just
used his code, he wasn't otherwise involved. The email
address below is given only for completeness, and
                might be out of date.)

                        Agenda

VanLUG News and Announcements Dave Michelson
      http://www.linux.bc.ca/

With almost 8000 visitors, our booth at COMDEX/Canada West
was a tremendous success! We've already been asked to
organize the Linux Pavilion at COMDEX next year. Now it's
time to move forward with incorporation under the BC Societies
Act, preparations for the Linux presentation to UBC Computer
Science students on 25 Feb 1999, planning for InstallFest III,
and other projects.

The Edge Router Project Richard Pitt
      http://www.fireplug.net/

The 7/24 service provided by @Home and ADSL is very
convenient, but it also exposes one to a big security risk.
With the addition of 2 inexpensive ethernet cards and
FirePlug's Linux-based Edge Router software, an older
PC with just a 3 1/2" floppy and 12-16 MB of RAM can be
used to isolate your internal network from the "Bad Uglys"
out there on the Internet. In addition, it takes all the
work out of getting and using the DHCP address your ISP gives
you while doling out its own pool of addresses to your internal
systems so you can have more than one computer on the 'net
despite the single address the ISP gives you.

      Inside DHCP Brian Edmonds

The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) simplifies the
task of assigning IP addresses to clients. How is DHCP related
to BOOTP? How does DHCP actually work? How will DHCP likely
evolve in the future? Answers to all these questions and more....

Roundtable: @Home vs. ADSL Bill Gillespie

VanLUG members have accumulated an enormous amount of experience
and expertise with the @Home and ASDL services provided by
Rogers and BC Tel, respectively. Here, the group will share their
thoughts on the merits of each system and tips for newcomers.

OFFICIAL SLACKWARE LINUX WEBSITE LAUNCHED

January 15, 1999 - Slackware Linux gains official representation on the World
Wide Web as www.slackware.com goes online. The site serves as a centralized
resource for Slackware users, providing the latest development news alongside
sections for help with installation and configuration. www.slackware.com also
gives an introduction to Slackware for those who have not tried it, with an
overview of Slackware and ZipSlack, links to other Linux information sources,
and download locations for the distribution.

Slackware Linux is one of the oldest and most stable distributions of the
Linux operating system, which is released under the GNU Public License and is
therefore free for anyone to use and modify. Slackware's creator and
maintainer, Patrick Volkerding, has always followed the philosophy that
simplicity and stability make an operating system great. Now at version 3.6,
Slackware still reflects that philosophy. A special version of Slackware,
known as ZipSlack, is designed to be installed on a DOS or Windows(tm) system
with about 100MB of free space. ZipSlack is an excellent avenue of
exploration for those who are not quite ready to switch operating systems,
but who are interested in the Linux OS.

Slackware Linux can be found on the web at http://www.slackware.com
