The Leaf Project is officially off! The Leaf Project, which stands for
Linux Enhanced Audio Funnel, is a new interface to the /dev/dsp device.
It will accept input in the same exact methods as the current dsp
device, but provide a user-space mixer to mix multiple inputs to a
single output. The goal is to make playing sound on Linux a
non-exclusive operation. I got the idea while missing IM's because an
MP3 was playing. For more information, and for the prelimiary source
proof-of-concept, goto http://www.erols.com/vandegrift.

Version 1.1 of The Ace of Penguins, a set of X11 solitaire games, is
available at:
http://www.delorie.com/store/ace/
This package includes freecell, golf, mastermind, merlin, minesweeper,
pegged, solitaire, taipei, and thornq, plus a solitaire toolkit so
that you can write your own games. These games are modelled after the
Windows(tm) versions, with a number of enhancements as requested by my
wife :-) and a colorful "Linux-y" theme.
Version 1.1 adds new games, enhances keyboard and automatic play, and
stabilizes the animations. It also uses GNU automake and autoconf now.
The sources are released under the terms of the GNU GPL. Pre-built
binaries for various platforms are also available.

Workshop Title:
GFS and High Performance Networked Storage in Linux
Dates:
March 5 - 6 1999 (Friday / Saturday)
Times:
9:00 - 18:00 (Friday)
9:00 - 17:00 (Saturday)
Location:
NASA Ames Research Center
Moffett Field
Building 258
Room 127
Sponsored by:
NASA Mass Storage Systems Group, NASA Ames
Parallel Computer System labratory, University of Minnesota
Who should attend:
Vendors, users and researchers interested in building high
performance input/output and storage systems using open
source operating systems, including Linux
Registration:
See http://gfs.lcse.umn.edu/Pages/workshop.html
Workshop Description
Open source operating systems like Linux and BSD are gaining
increasing importance. At the same time, new interfaces like Fibre
Channel and new storage appliances are making storage systems
increasingly network-oriented. Open systems for network attached
storage require that the file system be non-proprietary.
An open, published file system metadata standard that operates across
multiple platforms and exploits network attached storage is
needed. Given the application demands and torrent of new network
storage technologies and devices that are coming, we may not be able
to rely on vendors to meet all our needs in the file systems they
build. Like the Internet, open source UNIX has the potential to
encourage the adoption of simple, open protocols in storage
networking.
On day 1 of this workshop we describe the Global File System, an open
source shared disk file system for storage area networks. The current
state of GFS will be reviewed and its future development
outlined. This workshop will provide a review of GFS design decisions
by the technical community, which will help improve and extend GFS and
make it easier for others to get involved. Day 2 will provide an open
forum for developers, researchers, and users to discuss high
performance IO and storage system design in Linux.
(See http://gfs.lcse.umn.edu/Pages/workshop.html for an agenda and list of
speakers.)
The Linux World Expo is being held preceeding this workshop, March 1-4
in the San Jose Convention Center. For more information on the Linux
World Expo see http://www.linuxworldexpo.com
