New features in 5.0
===================
Nice enhancements from Joachim Achtzehnter <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:
- - LPRng support. Hurray !!!
- - ghostscript 5 Uniprint Support
- - Writes the first 8k of a print job into a tmp file for
file type detection. This makes rewindstdin unnecessary.
- - YEAR2000 statement...
New features in 4.9.9 - patch-aa
================================
Uniprint support by Glenn Johnson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Sorry, I had no time to role a new apsfilter
release, it was only available via patch-aa in the FreeBSD ports
collection. It's always a good idea to look there for new patches.
http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/ports
New features in 4.9.9
=====================
Support recognition and printing of bzip2 compressed files
Upgrade and Bugfixes in 4.9.8
=============================
Support printing of PDF files !
Fix SETUP and mksymlinks script to fully support color printer.
Upgrade in 4.9.7
================
Do 4 Jun 1998 23:17:20 CEST Andreas Klemm <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Added support for new HP DeskJet Driver in FreeBSD port of ghostscript 5.10
As a result apsfilters SETUP needs to know about the new printer drivers
See:
http://bonk.ethz.ch/hp850/hp850.html
http://bonk.ethz.ch/hp850/hp850-readme.1.3.html
If you want that for Linux as well, you have to patch the ghostscript
sources and to rebuild ghostscript 5.10. The URL's above contain
some (not complete) instructions how to do that.
For more hints you can browse through my diffs in the FreeBSD
ports collection.
Bugfixes in 4.9.6
=================
Fr 29 Mai 1998 00:04:35 CEST Andreas Klemm <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* From: Neil Hart <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
get rid of SPOOLDIR /usr/spool for Linux installations ...
nearly all OS now use /var/spool ...
* apsfilter 4.9.6 released
Di 26 Mai 1998 21:10:11 CEST Andreas Klemm <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* From: Neil Hart <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
1. the script setup/compile refers to the directory a2ps-4.2-akl-new,
but the source is actually in the directory a2ps-4.2-akl
2. the script setup/compile doesn't invoke Makefile.linux, but
instead simply defaults to use the (non-functional) Makefile
in that directory
3. the install_it script in the rewind-stdin directory has the
line ''cp rewindstdin $BINDIR" commented out, so it never
actually installs the program
New Goodies in 4.9.5
====================
o Support direct printing of HTML documents
using html2ps
New Goodies in 4.9.4
====================
o Absolutely new SETUP:
- view your gs binaries compiled in drivers (gs -h)
- browse through the devices.txt file
- menue oriented
- possibility to change print parameters and
PRINT a TEST page as long as you like
- saves the current SETUP environment settings in ./SETUP.cfg
even if you have to terminate with ^C your settings are not lost !
- SETUP reads old envireoment on starup if SETUP.cfg file is present
- SETUP knows about all gs 5.10 drivers + 3rd party hp850 driver
- enhanced serial printer setup in preparation
- saves some interesting printer settings from SETUP
at the end of /etc/apsfilterrc, so printer is ready for use,
as tested !
o Bugfixes from SuSE developement team and other people.
o Supports FreeBSD ports collection
o Patches from FreeBSD ports collection included
o ghostscript 5.10 support
o hp850 driver support
o Still no support for LPRng !!!!
Please use a standard (Berkeley) lpd package !!!!
Thomas Bueschgens
=================
Thomas Bueschgens isn't involved in the apsfilter developement
as co-author anymore. Don't try to send him mail.
Thomas, thanks for the good work in the past !
New Goodies in 4.9.3
====================
apsfilter 4.9.3 is apsfilter 4.9.1 for FreeBSD 2.1 in it's own
package format. This version is part of the FreeBSD installation
CD-Rom offered by Walnut Creeck.
Support for FreeBSD ports collection
Apsfilter is now more secure. You have to set INSECURE in /etc/apsfilterrc
as root first otherwise its not possible for users to use the
custom files $HOME/.apsfilterrc.
There is a new switch DVIPS_RESOL_DorP. Some dvips versions use the P
and some the D Option to change the printer resolution on the command line.
So if you have trouble printing TeX dvi files using dvips, check this one
first, please ! It defaults now to -D so it runs like a charm with
Thomas Essers teTeX-0.3 package ;-)
Nice Contribution:
okidisplay is for HPLJ compatible OKI 400ex. They have a programmable
display. Martin Kraemer ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) has made a C Program,
that hacks the current print job into the display of the printer in the
following form: <job>:<user>@<host>
So you can see, what print job currently is active ;-)
WHAT IS APSFILTER
=================
Do you have the German Unix Magazine UnixOpen February 1995 handy ?
Yes ?! Then read the article about apsfilter "Jetzt wird Druck gemacht".
APSFILTER is a lineprinter input filter for systems with a BSD-like
printing mechanism (lpd, /etc/printcap), that saves users a lot of work
when printing different file types wether compressed or not !!!
Additionally it enables non Postscript printers, that are supported
by the free postscript emulator - under the terms of the GPL -
"ghostscript" (gs), to print postscript files automatically !
With the new apsfilter Version 3.0 its now possible to print
*compacted* documents directly without unpacking !!!
The wanted packers/unpackers have to be already installed on your system.
o Supported packers:
BZIP2, GZIP, PACK, COMPRESS, FREEZE/MELT
o Supported file types:
Postscript
TeX DVI
Ascii
Data (PCL,...)
GIFF
TIFF
Sun Rasterfiles
FIG
PNM (pbmplus)
HTML
PDF
Unix Platforms, that are able to run apsfilter flawlessly
=========================================================
- FreeBSD 1.X
- FreeBSD 2.X
- FreeBSD 3.X
- FreeBSD 4.X
- NetBSD
- OpenBSD
- SUN SPARCSTATIONS, Solaris 1.1.1 (SunOS4) (when using
another file command that can read from a pipe)
- Many Linux Distributions
But please use the supported lpd print daemon, not LPRng ;-)
- and surely all commercial Unix Systems,
that run a BSD 4.X operating system

Subject: GTalk and QTalk 0.05
Date: Sat, 20 Feb 1999 03:42:07 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Hello,
QTalk and GTalk 0.05 are now available from:
http://www.informatik.fernuni-hagen.de/import/pi3/joerg/squeak/talktalk.html
QTalk and GTalk are code forks of the open and highly-portable Smalltalk-80
implementation called Squeak (http://squeak.cs.uiuc.edu/) whose virtual machine
is written entirely in Smalltalk. To achieve portability Squeak does not
support native widgets. Therefore QTalk and GTalk are an effort to close this
gap. Its objective is the integration with GNOME/GTK and KDE/QT for building
an Smalltalk language environment which allows rapid application development.
This is the first version based on Squeak 2.3. Also, the GtkTree and GtkTreeItem
widgets are now supported. This release also contains the beginning of a
GtkTreeBrowser. Besides that, more example code was added. New GTK screenshots
are also available:
Launcher:
http://www.informatik.fernuni-hagen.de/import/pi3/joerg/squeak/launcher.gif
(The GUI builder icon is there, but has no functionality yet)
Beginning of a tree browser:

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
tpconfig version 2.2 has now been released. tpconfig is a Linux driver
for the Synaptics touchpad found on many laptops (Acer, Dell, Olivetti,
TI, Winbook and others).
tpconfig is available at www.compass.com/synaptics.html
Version 2.2 adds support for the Linux 2.2.X kernels. Version 2.2
now also gracefully times out if you run it on top of gpm or under X.
tpconfig is normally run in a startup script before gpm is started. See
the README for more details.
Thanks to John Bell ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) for his assistance in testing this
new version of tpconfig.
tpconfig was originally written by C. Scott Ananian and is now being maintained
by me at this site.
Revision History:
2/16/99 Version 2.2:</b> - Bruce Kall ([EMAIL PROTECTED]):
Modified to work with 2.2.x kernel as well as 2.0.x
kernels. This version now also gracefully times out if
being run on top of gpm or X.
7/8/98 Version 2.0:</b> - Bruce Kall ([EMAIL PROTECTED]):
Changed to work with modern Synaptic touchpads which contain
newer firmware (that have a single mode byte). Also added
detection of newer touchpad info ('Super' 'Ultrathin',
'Widepad','Stamppad','Submini','Multiswich')
12/16/1977 Version 0.1.1:</b> - C. Scott Ananian<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Subject: SCO Open Server's AFS/EAFS support
Date: Sat, 20 Feb 1999 03:42:55 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Hi,
I have a patch to System V FS driver that should allow you to mount
and read data on AFS or Extended AFS filesystems. (note that AFS
stands for Acer File System, not for Andrew FS ;)
Please also note, that the patch is considered to be alpha quality,
so it only supports read-only mode. It was created against clean
2.2.1 sources and is available at:
<http://www.knm.org.pl/prezes/patches/sysv-afs-support-18021999.diff>
To apply please go to the directory, where you have the kernel
sources installed and run the command:
$ patch -p1 < /path/to/patch.file
After that just recompile your kernel. Don't forget to set 'System V
and Coherent filesystem support' aka CONFIG_SYSV_FS to [Y]es or
[M]odule. Please also note that the number of available filesystem
types has changed, ie. the 'mount -t xenix/coherent' is gone and
'mount -t sysv' handles all the cases.
How can you help:
- - by doing a lot of testing and sending me success or bug report,
- - by sending me some reference information about AFS/EAFS filesystems,
- - by looking at fs/sysv/TODO file and trying to help with some of
the issues listed there,
- - by donating a CD with an evaluation version of SCO Open Server,
as my old one is broken and I can't afford getting another
one from SCO (no credit card). This would allow me to do some
more serious testing and would be helpfull in implementing
support for SCO 'divvy' partitions.
Patches, comments, even flames welcome !
Have fun,
Kris

If you are a Linux developer and have completed a viable Linux
application, GraphOn Corporation (www.graphon.com) may have a
showcase opportunity for you (no costs, no strings, no
hitches--just GraphOn's great enthusiasm and support for the
Linux community)! We invite you to send us your answers below
for:
1) a chance to showcase your application during a special
evening event March 2 in San Jose,California
2) a chance to showcase your applications in an online
showcase of Linux apps (details below).
In a couple of weeks, GraphOn will host a party to launch "The
Playpen," an online showcase of selected Linux applications
accessible by people who don't even have Linux on their
desktops. (Watch www.graphon.com for The Playpen URL or better
yet, come to the party!) GraphOn will launch The Playpen with
a great party 7:30pm the evening of Tuesday, March 2 during
LinuxWorld Expo and Conference at the Hyatt St. Claire across
the street from the San Jose Convention Center. The GraphOn
Playpen launch party is co-sponsored by Corel, Hardware
Computing Canada (they're giving away a free NetWinder at the
party), Oracle and Red Hat and your app may be chosen as a
guest demo for the evening. (You'll be notified by February 26
if you are selected). If you're going to Linux Expo, come by
our party, enjoy the music, food and meet the sponsors.
GraphOn's online Linux showcase in The Playpen lets people
with Windows, multi-user NT or just a browser use GraphOn's
GO-Global, GO-Between or GO-Joe to play with the Linux
applications. GraphOn's software can be downloaded for a free
trial period to see just how cool Linux apps are, as follows:
GO-Joe (no download necessary)
GO-Global (download of 300k native Windows client)
GO-Between- (download of 300k client that runs on multi-user
NT)
So here are the questions:
What do you call your application(s)?
What do your applications do?
Is your application finished and tested?
Would you be interested in submitting your application to
be considered for The PlaypenLaunch Party March 2?
If your application is selected, would you be available to
demonstrate your application at the party that evening?
Would you be interested in submitting your Linux
applications for consideration for online access in The
Playpen?
Thanks! Please send your response by Friday, February 24 to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] DO NOT send the application itself
(yet). We'll get back to you and let you know where to send
the actual application. (GraphOn does not guarantee that every
