=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

I am announcing the formation of the Peninsula Linux Users Group (PLUG -
http://www.linuxforum.com/plug) in Hampton Roads, Virginia. We realize
there is already a Hampton Roads Linux Users Group (HRLUG -
http://hrlug.runlinux.org); however we are targeting users north of the
Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel and south of Richmond.

The first meeting will be held at the Main Street Library main conference
room on Wednesday, March 10th, at 7:00 p.m. This will probably be a short
meeting lasting less then an hour.

Topics:

* Focus/Format of the LUG
* Involvement with Linux Forum.
* Solicitation from members ideas or actual work for a website for PLUG.
* Ideas for a more permanent location, agreement of time and day.
* Gauge local interest for this group.

Directions: From I-64 take Mercury Blvd. towards the James River Bridge.
Make a right on Jefferson Avenue. Get in the left hand lane and turn left
on Main Street. You will go under a bridge for trains. The library is on
your left next to a firestation. If you make it onto Warwick Blvd, you have
gone to far.

From: Tony Nugent <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: xpdf-0.80-decrypt-1 - xpdf with decryption
Date: Thu,  4 Mar 1999 21:19:13 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

I have just uploaded the following files to:

ftp://ftp.replay.com/pub/replay/incoming/

        xpdf-0.80-decrypt-1.src.rpm
        xpdf-0.80-decrypt-1.i386.rpm

I assume that they will eventually be moved to:

ftp://ftp.replay.com/pub/replay/linux/redhat/SRPMS/xpdf-0.80-decrypt-1.src.rpm
ftp://ftp.replay.com/pub/replay/linux/redhat/i386/xpdf-0.80-decrypt-1.i386.rpm

This is a version of xpdf-0.80 but with a patch (included in the
..src.rpm as "xpdf-0.80-decrypt.patch") that enables it to read
encrypted pdf files. See the file README.decryption that is included
within the patch (and installed into the /usr/doc/xpdf-0.80/
directory).

This version of xpdf installs into /usr/X11R6/bin/ rather than /usr/bin/
and the binary has been built on a RedHat 5.2 (glibc6) system.

xpdf author:    Derek B. Noonburg <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
xpdf web site:  http://www.foolabs.com/xpdf/

(The author is aware of the existance of this version).

Other source:   ftp://ftp.sci.usq.edu.au/pub/linux/xpdf/

Description (from the rpm header):

Xpdf is a viewer for Portable Document Format (PDF) files. (These are also
sometimes also called 'Acrobat' files, from the name of Adobe's PDF
software.) Xpdf is designed to be small and efficient. It does not use the
Motif or Xt libraries. It uses standard X fonts. Xpdf is quite usable on a
486-66 PC running Linux.

This version has been patched to enable it to work with encrypted pdf files.
(Sources not for export from the USA).

New in Version 0.80 (from version 0.7a):

        - Support for some Japanese fonts (Type 0 fonts using the
          Adobe-Japan1-2 character collection, horizontal only).
        - Added pdfinfo application.
        - Added pdftopbm application.
        - Added pdfimages application.
        - Xpdf is now licensed under the GPL.
        - Lots of other little things (see the CHANGES file)

The decryption rpms have had various tweaks to .spec file to get
things installed *right* (0.7a decryption release had mode 644 for
/usr/doc/xpdf-0.7a) (Also, keep installation into /usr/X11R6/)

There is an xpdf port for DOS and Windows available, compiled using
DJGPP, and includes a decryption-capable version. More information is
available from:

        http://www.fzu.cz/~kouba/programs/xpdf/

Enjoy!

Cheers
Tony

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hi. Our family project: "The Linux Newbie Administrator Guide" has
been significantly updated. The current version is 0.0.8. Since the
last public announcement, the contents have been roughly doubled and
two nasty typos have been corrected. More additions are in progress.

The Linux Newbie Administrator FAQ contains simple (hopefully) and
minimalistic answers to same basic problems that a newbie might
encounter while using/administrating his/her machine or home network:

mounting, fstab, automounting;
setup of soundcard, printer, ppp, LILO problems;
running a program, adjusting priorities, getting help;
kde install for RedHat 5.2 users, X-server setup;
remote x-windowing, ip masquerading, samba;
essential Linux shortcuts and commands.

Newbie administrators are welcome to visit:

Comments, contributions, links, mirrors, and distributors are
greatly appreciated!

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Siag Office 3.1.7 is the latest version of the free office package
which consists of the spreadsheet Siag, the word processor PW
and the animation program Egon.

Siag is easy to use, yet infinitely flexible through multiple
embedded interpreters and a plugin mechanism that allows other
programs to run inside the main document. The supported interpreters
are SIOD, Guile, Tcl and Python.

Changes from version 3.1.6 include:

 - New Tsiag maintainer: Dan Gohman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

 - Curses interface more portable by using autoconf

 - Plotting from vertically as well as horizontally oriented data
   by Rodrigo Alfonso Guzmn ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). See the
   file vplot.scm.

 - Croatian message catalog, thanks to Matej Vela <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

 - Plugins can initiate communication with the parent application
   to send it commands or data

 - Image plugin scales images when it is resized

 - Plugins talk back by sending X events back to the main application.
   The Hello plugin has been extended to make use of the new feature.

 - Modified makefiles to allow building outside source tree
   (suggested by "Marcus G. Daniels" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>)

 - Code restructured to reduce duplication even further

 - New Text plugin reads text files or executes arbitrary
   shell commands, runs external programs.

 - Plotting plugin, available on menu as Plot - Plugin.
   Requires Gnuplot and PBMplus/NetPBM.

 - Instructions for building on Irix, by Harold Toms

Interestingly enough, a fellow reader has written an even better synopsis of
the essay I wrote than I did. To wit, by Jack Carrol:

Open source software development is a barter economy with some very unusual
economic properties. The original author of a piece of OSS gets paid, but
not in money. The author gets paid in software. So does everybody else who
contributes a feature or a bug fix. This form of payback is very real, for
all of its intangibility. The return is huge-- everybody who contributes to
the growing program ends up with the useof a much more capable and
higher-quality product than they could afford to develop on their own, and
they get a product which has been carefully enhanced to meet their exact
needs. The actual developers aren't the only contributors and beneficiaries,
either. Everyone who contributes documentation, distribution services,
mutual tech support, or publicity participates in this barter economy.

Subject: lirc-0.5.4 Linux Infrared Remote Control

LIRC - Linux Infrared Remote Control, Version: 0.5.4

Copyright (C) 1996 Ralph Metzler <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Copyright (C) 1998,1999 Christoph Bartelmus <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
(according to GNU General Public Licence 2.0 or later)

lirc is a package that allows you to decode and send infra-red
signals of many (but not all) commonly used remote controls.
Pre-release versions are currently available at:
http://fsinfo.cs.uni-sb.de/~columbus/lirc/

It consists of a device driver, two daemon programs and some user
space applications. The included device drivers support devices
connected to serial and parallel ports. A desciption of receiver
and transmitter circuits can be found at http://www.mindwell.com/lirc/.
More and more support for commercially available IR solutions is being
added.

The most important part of lirc is the lircd daemon that will decode
IR signals received by the device driver and provide the information
on a socket.
It will also accept commands for IR signals to be sent.
The second daemon program called lircmd will connect to lircd and
translate the decoded IR signals to mouse movements. You can
e.g. configure X to use your remote control as an input device.

The user space application will allow you to control your computer
with your remote control. You can send X events to applications, start
programs and much more on just one button press.

Adding new remotes is still problematic but since version 0.5.2 there
comes the first program that will try to add new remote controls
automatically.

Don't expect much documentation. This is only a pre-release version
and there is still much to be done before lirc becomes easily
configurable and usable.
The possible applications are obvious: Infra-red mouse, remote control for
your TV tuner card or cd-rom, shutdown by remote, program your VCR
and/or satellite tuner with your computer, ...
For people with a little C/C++ knowlegde this should already be possible
with this pre-release. Otherwise, wait for version 1.0.
