Subject: Patchlevel 15 of xautolock released

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Patchlevel 15 of xautolock has now been spotted at:
ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/X11/screensavers/xautolock-pl15.tgz
In a not too distant future it should also show up in:
ftp://ftp.x.org/contrib/applications/xautolock-pl15.tgz
Other sites will surely follow once the mirroring catches up.
User visible changes from patchlevel 14 are:
1. addition of the `-locknow', `-unlocknow' and `-nowlocker' options;
2. the VMS port should now work to a much larger degree.
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Xautolock monitors console activity under the X window system, and
fires up a program of your choice if nothing happens during a
user configurable period of time. You can use this to automatically
start up a screen locker in case you tend to forget to do so manually
before having a coffee break.
Xautolock was conceived, written, and performed by:

Subject: /dev/changer - a driver to mount all the cd's in a changer
Date: 19 Mar 1999 19:03:12 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Hi,
Well this is the very first, almost working beta alpha gamma of /dev/changer.
It shouldn't even compile for you... cause you're missing some stuff in the
kernel includes which I have manually edited but haven't included patches
for yet.
See the source code for all the rest of the documentation available.
What:
/dev/changer will allow you to mount all the cd's in your changer(s) at once.
thus avoiding the hassle with scripts etc. And effectivly allowing a cheap way
to expensive jukeboxes along with their software...
A few things you should know:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] # for i in `seq 255`; do mknod /dev/changer$i b 42 $i; mkdir -p
/cdrom/$i done
and then:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] # mount /dev/changer1 /cdrom/1 -t iso9660
For any comments etc, send it to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] or check the website at
http://unfix.org/projects/changer
Current status:
Works partly, except it can only use one cd as the buffers aren't
invalidated in between... I'll hope to fix this tonight (CET).
Greets,
Jeroen Massar

Subject: 128-bit crypto: Fortify for Netscape: New releases.
Date: 19 Mar 1999 19:03:06 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Sydney, Australia. (16 Mar, 1999). Two new versions of Fortify for Netscape
have been released and are now generally available.
Version 2.2.0 on Windows 95/98/NT delivers support for the latest Netscape
v4.51 browsers. Version 1.4.0-Unix also supports the v4.51 browsers, on
Linux, Solaris (Sparc and Intel systems), Irix, and DEC Unix.
[Note that, at the time of writing, Netscape have not yet released the v4.51
browser on the Unix 'unsupported' cluster of platforms. When these platform
editions become available, Fortify will be updated accordingly.]
These releases of Fortify for Netscape also include changes to facilitate
its translation (localization) into non-English languages. Opportunities
now exist for commercial resellers, non-commercial groups, or individuals
to create or assist with non-English translations of Fortify. Expressions
of interest are hereby solicited! For further details please refer to
http://www.fortify.net/localization.html.
Fortify for Netscape is available immediately from the Fortify web site,
at http://www.fortify.net/, or from the Fortify mirror FTP sites (after
propagation is complete).
- ------------------------------------------------------------
About Fortify for Netscape:
Fortify for Netscape is a system that provides world-wide, unconditional,
full strength, 128-bit encryption to users of Netscape's Web browsers.
If you routinely use Netscape's export grade Web browsers (i.e. the ones
that are available on the net), then you need Fortify.
Fortify is free for all forms of non-commercial use. It currently supports
most, if not all, of the non-beta versions of Netscape Navigator (v3 and v4)
and Communicator (v4), that have been released on the following platforms:-
DEC-OSF + Dec UNIX (Alpha systems)
SGI Irix 5.x and 6.x (Mips systems)
Sun Solaris 2.4 and 2.5.1 (Sparc systems)
Sun Solaris 2.4 and 2.5.1 (Intel x86 systems)
Sun SunOS 4.1.3_U1 (Sparc systems)
BSD, FreeBSD, BSDI (Intel x86 systems)
Linux-Elf and Linux-glibc2 (Intel x86 systems)
MKLinux and LinuxPPC (PowerPC systems)
Microsoft Windows 95/98/NT (Intel x86 systems)
IBM OS/2 (Intel x86 systems)
Full details about availability, copyright, download sites, latest news,
and an FAQ guide can all be found at the Fortify web site:-

(sunsite is now metalab and is fine;
tsx-11 still has a full disk;
ftp.win.tue.nl is unreachable;
ftp.cwi.nl:/pub/aeb/kbd is OK today but will be down for maintenance tomorrow;
ftp.*.kernel.org is fine)
No significant things changed, but kbd (and util-linux) were provided
with national language support, and now need translations for their
messages. There are preliminary versions of the Dutch and Russian messages.
This NLS is completely untested of course.

Subject: Gsh 0.0.12 - Graphical shell
Date: 19 Mar 1999 22:58:15 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Gsh is designed to do two things:
1) be a comfortable environment for people who are already accustomed
to using a Unix shell.
2) make operations that are difficult or awkward with a normal shell
easier by having the shell take advantage of a graphical environment.
Some of the features include:
* context sensitive popup menu that gives you a list of commands based
on what is currently selected.
* user confurable menu for commonly used commands.
* the ability to run multiple commands simultaneously and keep the
output separate.
* special colors that differentiate commands from output; running
commands from completed commands; etc.
Please visit the Gsh Home Page at
http://personal.atl.bellsouth.net/atl/v/c/vcato/gsh/
This is the first development release of Gsh. It is being developed
under Linux, but has also been tested to some extent under Irix. I am
interested in making it usable under any Unix-like system. Gsh is
distributed under the GPL.

Xi Graphics Releases Accelerated-X Display Server
Version 5
The Only Fast, Stable Graphics for Linux in Corporate
Desktop Environment
The latest version in Xi Graphics' line of Accelerated-X commercial
display servers continues to bring exceptional graphics performance and
stability to the Linux Operating System in a corporate desktop
environment. The Denver-based company has conducted tests on a broad
range of graphics hardware, comparing Accelerated-X servers with
freeware and other commercial X servers. The results are posted the on
the company's Web site at http://www.xig.com/NewSite. The x11perf test
program is freely available and is often shipped with Linux
distributions.
"As Linux becomes more prominent on corporate desktops and laptops,
it's vital to have an X server that not only provides maximum graphical
performance, but also insures the users get stable operation. And the
only way to accomplish that is with Accelerated-X," says Lee Roder,
sales and service director for Xi Graphics. "Accelerated-X represents a
million bytes of quality commercial code, about twice the size of the
Linux kernel itself, that enables a GUI to perform with the speed and
stability that graphics users would expect from a stable OS such as
Linux."
Accelerated-X version 5 features an auto probe function that
automatically searches for monitor and graphics hardware and includes
support for nearly 600 graphics cards and about 2500 monitors currently.
Other features include a graphical install, graphic tablet support, mice
with wheels support and, for laptops, Advanced Power Management (APM) .
The APM feature, which displays an icon in the upper left hand corner
of the screen, allows the user to select full on, suspend, and sleep --
an especially useful feature for laptop users trying to conserve battery
power.
Whether the desktop installation uses CDE or freeware window and
desktop managers, Accelerated-X provides high performance and accurate
graphics display on CRT or LCD monitors. Hardware overlays, hardware
gamma color correction, monitor color temperature control and TrueType
font rendering are standard support features in Accelerated-X that are
generally not found in Linux freeware servers.
Accelerated-X version 5 comes in three configurations, desktop
($99.95), laptop ($199.95), and multi-head ($299.00). All prices are US
(slightly higher international rates apply), shipping and handling are
additional. The cost includes unlimited free customer support via phone
and e-mail. Quantity discounts are available.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
The next meeting of the Washtenaw Linux Users Group will
be at Washtenaw Community College in the Technical & Industrial
Building. Room TI-130.
The meeting is at 8 pm Thursday March 18th.
Topic: Linux Intro - Now that I've got it, what do I do with it???
Dean will discuss some of the issues of what to do with Linux now that
you have it installed. He hopes to cover such
things as PPP dialup, mounting filesystem and the fstab table, ISO9660
filesystems, fdformat, mkfs, diald, dip, etc. I'm
sure Dean will have a lot of very usefull information for us.
A general Q&A session will follow.
We also have goodies from joining GLUE, Groups of Linux Users Everywhere
including
little Powered by Linux stickers for your computer case!
