Subject: Gsh 0.1.0 - graphical shell
Date: Sat, 10 Apr 1999 11:05:51 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Release 0.1.0 of Gsh is available at
http://personal.atl.bellsouth.net/atl/v/c/vcato/gsh
There are lots of small changes to the look and feel of Gsh. Hopefully
this interface will be more natural.
Here is a list of changes:
* More generic pty handling routines. Hopefully these will work under
a greater variety of systems.
* If a command is not focused, it won't scroll the window to make new
output visible.
* Added history button beside the command line.
* Made the default font be in the "fixed" font family.
* Character graphics now work if you are using the "fixed" font
family.
* Default aliases are always read on startup unless the user has
explicitly unaliased them or overridden them.
* Added the prompt to the command line.
* Now handles ksh and bash style substitutions in PS1 prompt.
* Several changes to the font selection interface.
* Included a "restart" alias in the default aliases.
* Included browse function for use with url types.
* Fixed alias recursion problem.
* Gsh automatically executes "source $ENV" on startup if $ENV exists.
* "if", "for", and "while" commands are now implemented internally.
* Added "source" and "." commands.
* Better variable handling.
* Changed the look of the main window slightly.
* Added the <ESC>[P and <ESC>[@ control sequences.
* Added user-definable functions using the "function x { }" syntax.
* Changes to make clear work more reasonably.
* Added "Home Page" selection under the Help menu.
* Added "url", "http url", and "ftp url" types.
* Made a fix to the window resizing code that should fix problems with
the
window shrinking on some systems, and fix the maximize/unmaximize
problem.
* Made font changes apply to both the output area and the command
line.
* Made the file completion window font be the same as the command line
font.
Bug reports, suggestions, or comments are greatly appreciated.

Subject: Yplot - a yorick interface to the PLPlot library
Date: Sat, 10 Apr 1999 11:14:39 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Y P L O T
---------
A Yorick interface to PLPlot
This is to announce the avalibility of a Yorick language binding for the
PLPlot plotting library.
Yorick is a fast interpreted matrix language in the spirit of Matlab and
others, but with a C-like syntax. And of course it is free, with source code
availible under a BSD-like licence.
See ftp://ftp-icf.llnl.gov/pub/Yorick/yorick-ad.html for more details.
PLPlot is a vector plotting library with support for several devices,
including X11, Postscript and more. It can plot several types of 2D and 3D
plots and contains extensive support for different vector fonts.
See http://emma.la.asu.edu/plplot/ for more details.
Yplot
- -----
Yplot provides several new yorick commands to make use of the PLPlot
library. It also comes with an extensive tutorial with several examples to
get you started.
Availibility
- ------------
A minimalist home page for yplot has been set up at
http://www.srl.caltech.edu/personnel/conrad/yplot.html
which provides links to download versions of the source and rpm binaries for
Linux on x86 and alpha. The x86 versions were created with Redhat 5.2, while
the alpha versions was created with 5.1.
To use yplot, you need the following:
plplot-990122-1.X.rpm -- binary PLPlot library, with X the architecture
yorick-1.4-10.X.rpm -- binary yorick distribution.
or yorick-1.4-11.X.rpm
yplot-1.0.0-1.X.rpm -- binary yplot distribution.
These packages are also availible on ftp://contrib.redhat.com
RPM Packaging
- -------------
Note that the PLPlot library mentioned above is based on a new developer
snapshot from the PLPlot homepage. Furthermore, the rpm versions has been
modified relative to the developer's snapshot to fix several bugs in the
plotting code and build mechanism by Alan Irwin ([EMAIL PROTECTED]).
Yplot will still work with older 0.4.99 versions of PLPlot, though, and does
not rely on the modified version.
Alan also did the packaging and updating of the yplot-1.0.0 release to work
with yorick-1.4. Reading between the lines you wil come to realise that
basically Alan did all the hard work to make this announcement possible ;-)
Thanks Alan!
Licence
- -------
Yplot itself falls under the GPL. Because it uses PLPLot and Yorick, you may
want to check out their respective licences for your legal reading pleasure.
With kind regards

Subject: CONFERENCE: Linux Kongress 1999 announcement and call for papers
Date: Sat, 10 Apr 1999 11:08:16 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Announcement and Call For Papers:
6th International Linux Kongress 1999
=====================================
The 6th International Linux Kongress 1999 will be held from September
8 to September 10 at the University of Augsburg, Germany. It follows
the tradition of the Linux conference series (Heidelberg 94, Berlin
95/96, Wuerzburg 97 and Cologne 98) which has evolved into the most
important meeting for Linux experts and developers.
The conference will offer up to 25 talks during two days (September 9
and 10) in two parallel tracks. The first track will be dedicated to
Linux development, the second track will be intended to accomodate
talks about Linux applications and usage. Each talk will last 40 minutes
(possibly including discussion). The language of the talks will be
English or exceptionally German.
The two tracks will contain a combination of invited talks and
referred papers. The 1999 Linux Kongreß Program Committee seeks
original and innovative papers about the current Linux kernel
development and about Linux applications and usage.
Some particularly interesting Linux development topics are:
- Linux 2.2
- hardware architectures
- integration of new hardware developments
Interesting application and usage topics include but are
not limited to:
- clustering
- game development
In addition to the talks, there will be some tutorials on September 8.
Proposals are welcome. Topics will be announced later.
For participants, interested in a particular topic not covererd by the
program, we offer additional informal gatherings (Birds-of-a-Feather
sessions). BoFs may be scheduled at the conference or in advance by
mailing the program chair.
In order to provide the best possible talk offerings, we solicit
proposals for new talks. Questions regarding a topic's relevance to the
conference may be addressed to the program chair via email to
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. An abstract (at least one full page)
is required for the selection process. The preferred form of submission
is via electronic mail to the program chair.
Submissions must be received by June 15, 1999 latest.
For distribution to the participants, an extended abstract or a full
paper must be provided by August 15, 1999. It is required that papers
will not have been previously published elsewhere.
In order to enable everybody to actually give a selected talk, the
Linux Kongress organization can pay for travel expenses and
accomodation.
The conference will be organized by GUUG (German UNIX Users Group),
LUGA (Linux User Group Augsburg), the University of Augsburg,
NLUUG (UNIX Users Group - The Netherlands), LIVE (Linux-Verband),
and LunetIX. It is supported by Fachbuchhandlung J.F. Lehmanns,
Addison-Wesley and O'Reilly. Any profits from this event will be used to
support Free Software Projects.
Online-registration information will be available in May 1999 on
http://www.linux-kongress.de.
Of course you will find the latest state of the program and other
information about the event at the same address.
If you want to be informed about relevant news concerning the
congress, you can also subscribe to the mailing-list

Welcome2L v3.00 STABLE release
Welcome2L is a little program that may run at login time
to produce a BBS like ANSI login logo. It's very similar
to Linux_Logo. But where Linux_Logo intends to be portable
Welcome2L intends to produce the best looking ANSI screens
by making full usage of PC graphic characters. Therefor an
i386 architecture is required to use it and it will only
produce 80 columns ANSI screens.
A new ANSI screen was added - This
is the first STABLE version released.
Here is a screenshot of the new ANSI [19K]:
