LUGmap - a clickable, zoomable map of LUGs around the world -
may be found at
http://vancouver-webpages.com/geo/lugmap.html
When fully populated, users will be able to find their nearest user group
by zooming in and clicking their geographic location.
Linux User Groups are invited to add their position to the map.
Most Canadian LUGs are preloaded based on information on the LUG list
(lugww.nllgg.nl) and CLUE.
At present, geographic positions of the nearest city centre (e.g.
from the Getty Thesaurus) are probably good enough, though in
principle accurate positions should be used.
When entering positions, remember that North America is to the left
of the Greenwich Meridian, and thus has negative Longitude (Eastings) !!
The entry form should hopefully make this abundantly clear.

Rewrite of the well-known utility WHICH(1)
Improvements over old `which':
* Uses the exact same algorithm as bash(1)
to find the executable or script that
will be executed. Also works for
absolute path names.
* Prints full and cleaned up paths
by default but allows to print ~/ and ./.
Changes from 2.0 --> 2.1:
* New option --all (Don't stop after first match).
* Path clean up on output (get rid of //, /./ and /../).
* Bug fixes (--skip-tilde also skipped dot).
Usage: which [options] [--] programname [...]
Options: --version Print version and exit successfully.
--skip-dot Skip directories in PATH that start with a dot.
--skip-tilde Skip directories in PATH that start with a tilde.
--show-dot Don't expand a dot to current directory in output.
--show-tilde Output a tilde for HOME directory for non-root.
--tty-only Stop processing options on the right if not on
tty.
--all, -a Print all matching executables in PATH, not just
the first
See http://www.xs4all.nl/~carlo17/which/ for online
man page, downloading and full changelog.

Linux release:
Here is information on the release of Penguin's new 8-way servers.
This is significant not only because they are the first company to do
this, but also Linux now has the computing power to run the fastest
enterprise applications. Please contact Adam Lempert for more

Penguin Computing Unveils New Penguin Linux 8000 8-way SMP Server
First to provide new generation of E-commerce Linux Solutions
with Intel Corp. Xeon processors
San Francisco April 8 -- The explosion of E-commerce has created a
huge need for more powerful, cost-effective open system multi-
processor (SMP) servers. Unfortunately, as companies have raced to
get in the game, they were left with few choices. Penguin Computing,
Inc., just changed all that. Penguin announced today that it is the
first and only company to offer an 8-way SMP server for Linux.
Penguin has built the fastest possible Intel-based computer by
combining an L3 cache design adopted from mainframe technology with
the industry standard Intel Corp. (Nasdaq: INTC) Xeon processors.
"We have built a solid reputation with leading E-commerce companies
as the provider of choice for reliable, performance-driven Linux-
based systems," says Sam Ockman, founder of Penguin Computing. "We
are the one-stop shop for E-commerce Solutions on Linux."
Penguin Computing offers its customers the option to have Internet
applications such as the Apache web server and Oracle applications
and databases pre-installed on all servers. The Penguin Linux 8000 8-
way SMP Server is the fastest, most scaleable system available for
enterprises supporting large scale Internet and E-commerce
applications. The new system optimizes sequential data accesses for
large databases and has the best performance of any Intel based Linux
system.
Ockman says that "Penguin Linux 8000 servers are posting previously-
unheard-of records for Intel-based database management servers, an
area previously dominated by RISC-based machines running proprietary
UNIX. Companies can now build their Internet infrastructure with our
systems or have Penguins Linux systems complement their existing RISC-
based machines. Either way, they will experience substantial cost
savings, the scalability of an 8-way Xeon system and the reliability
of Linux."
Comparable RISC-based UNIX systems currently offered on the market
carry a significantly higher price tag, as much as four times the
cost of the new Penguin Linux 8000. "The introduction of Penguin
Computings 4-way Intel Pentium III Xeon processor helped fuel the
recent explosion of Linux into the major E-commerce enterprises. The
introduction of their new Linux 8000 8-way SMP Servers should make an
equally big splash, providing a scaleable platform for E-commerce and
ERP applications under Linux," predicts Ockman.
Penguin is already working with leading Internet-based companies such
as Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE), Excite (Nasdaq: XCIT), Paramount Pictures,
Viacom (AMEX: VIA) and Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN), which enjoy quick
deployment time and support for their Internet-focused businesses.
Penguin enjoys a competitive edge over its competitors such as HP
(NYSE: HWP) and Compaq (NYSE: CPQ) because of its narrow focus and
lower cost structure. It also has the most extensive testing and
burn-in process in the Linux industry, far surpassing the big
manufacturers. All products can be custom built and ordered through
their web site.
Penguin Computing was started by Open Source advocate Sam Ockman as a
way to provide Linux solutions and knowledge to the fast-growing Open
Source Community. The company offers free standard technical support
with all systems as well as upgrades and onsite support 24 hours a
day, 7 days a week. Penguin Computing is currently a privately held
company, but is planning an IPO later this year.
Penguin Computing can be reached at 1-888-PENGUIN, or at
www.penguincomputing.com. To schedule an interview, contact Will
Hodges of Merger Communications, Inc. (www.mergerusa.com)/(713) 267-
