Hello,

.... not perfect of course, but worth a look at.

There is a new version (3.2) of afbackup, a network backup
tool, ready for download.
The most important new feature is multi-stream ability, i.e.
several clients can run a backup to one server in parallel.

The complete list of changes is below, for more details please
refer to the Changes file of the distribution. Also see the
upgrade hints in the README, HOWTO and UPGRADE files.

Download URL is

ftp://ftp.zn-gmbh.com/pub/linux/afbackup-3.2.tar.gz

or if you can wait a day and have better throughput on

ftp://ftp.sbs.de/pub/tools/afbackup/afbackup-3.2.tar.gz

Regards,

  Albert Fluegel

The complete list of changes since 3.1.4:

3.1.4 - 3.2
        - ACLs supported on Solaris2 and HPUX-10, if available
        - Also on Solaris >= 2.6 filesizes > 2GB supported
        - Multi stream server
        - Status file on server side, regularly updated during operation
        - Descending into directories is now done like find -depth
        - Hopefully even safer tape error handling
        - Service names allowed wherever port numbers were to be given
        - -v option for verify, restore and copy_tape
        - Tapes can be set read-only
        - Tapes are no longer overwritten, server keeps track, which
tapes are needed for all the clients
        - Admin must explicitely permit overwrite of needed tapes
        - Verify is much faster now
        - Bug fixed (tapeblocksize may now be > MaxBytesPerFile / 10)
        - Init Media command for preparing the media for access, e.g.
          mounting a removble disk
        - More versatile Change-Cart-Command (see FAQ Q6)
        - Tape blocksize now written into the tape label
        - Filelist recovery also restores uid fields
        - Minimum restore info is no longer cumulative
        - Configuration programs can get config file as argument
        - label_tape now also labels "directory-pseudo-tapes"

Hi All,

What is x86emu?
- ---------------

The x86emu project is an emulator for executing x86 real mode code on
any CPU platform, including the x86 CPU family. The emulator started
out as the free equivalent to the Digital Equipment x86 emulator in
the Linux MILO loader. Since then the emulator has been updated to
include support for 32-bit real mode instructions, and optimised for
better performance, and should be able to completely replace the
Digitial Equipment proprietry emulator in MILO.

This emulator has lots of different of uses on Linux and other
platforms. Some of those include:

. Ability to POST multi-head graphics controller configurations on
x86 using the existing adapter BIOS.
. Ability to POST the primary controller on non-x86 platforms to
bring it up into text mode for Linux.
. Ability to provide the Linux VBE framebuffer console driver with
the capabilities to call the BIOS on any number of controllers at
runtime. This will allow it to switch graphics modes on the fly,
program the hardware palette etc. On VBE/Core 3.0 adapters, this
also includes full refresh rate control out of the box!

The current maintainer of the x86emu project is Kendall Bennett
([EMAIL PROTECTED]). The emulator is licensed under the GNU
General Public License (GPL), with the library exception clause
included (ie: you can link the library with non-GPL'ed code).

How to subscribe?

Apple Blue & White G3s are now fully supported by Yellow Dog Linux Champion
Server.

Terra Soft Solutions is pleased to offer official Installation Support for
the Blue & Whites in conjunction with both the 'Install & Source CDs' and
with the full 'CDs, Guide to Installation, 3-ring binder, and zipper-case'

Learn more about KLUG at http://klug.armintl.com/ .

May 25th Meeting - IP Masquerade

IP Masquerade is a networking feature in Linux. If a Linux host is
connected to the Internet with IP Masquerade enabled, then computers
connecting to it (usually on the same LAN, but can also be connected
with other links such as modems or Parallel IP [PLIP]) can reach the
Internet as well, even though they have no officially assigned IP
addresses. IP Masquerade can allow a few people to surf the Internet
simultaneously with a single modem/network connection, only paying for a
single phone bill and Internet service charge at the end of the month.

The May 25th IP Masquerade presentation will be given by John Beimler.
John is a Open Source consultant, with over 6 years Linux experience. He
has his own company, Radiomind Studios and is currently supporting
Apache, Perl and other open source products.

General chair: David Kotz, Dartmouth College

Program chair: John Wilkes, Hewlett-Packard Laboratories

Sponsored by: ACM SIGOPS

Authors are invited to submit papers to the 17th SOSP describing
original research related to the design, implementation, analysis, and
deployment of operating systems. We seek a broad set of high quality,
relevant, interesting papers. We are soliciting submissions on a wide
range of topics including resource management, security, application
support, I/O, networking, user interface support, and OS-related
issues for the world-wide web. Our scope spans a wide range of
platforms and environments: embedded systems, mobile computers, PCs,
workstations, servers, high-performance machines, and production
environments - especially heterogeneous ones.

The SOSP traditions will continue: we will favor work that advances
the state of the art into new territory, or continues a significant
research dialogue, or reflects on practical applications of the
community's knowledge. We are looking for reports on newly-completed
work, experience studies, and constructive critiques of prior work, as
well as more speculative studies of fresh opportunities.

We anticipate that many contributions will emphasize the OS
community's contribution to the closely related fields of computer
architecture, data communications, programming systems and languages,
and applications. The Symposium attracts attendees with diverse
backgrounds, and we explicitly solicit papers not only in the
"traditional core" of the OS field, but also in the interface to these
areas and others. Topics of interest include, but are not restricted
to:

High-availability systems OS structure and organization
    OS performance evaluation Security
File and storage systems Processor architecture / OS interactions
    I/O architectures Networks and communications
    Low-power systems Mobile computing
    Parallel systems Ubiquitous computing
    Heterogeneous systems Multimedia support
Distributed systems Database and transaction support
    Real-time systems World-wide web support
    High-performance systems Commercial deployment experience

A poster session will provide an outlet for papers of unusual novelty,
and we hope to see some more speculative contributions in this
category. The tradition of a work-in-progress session will be
continued.

** Important dates

Deadline for receipt of submissions: May 17, 1999
Absolute, final, real deadline for receipt
