[Please feel free to pass this to anyone you think may be interested.]

This is an announcement regarding the next meeting of the Southern Tier
of New York Linux User Group (STNY LUG). STNY LUG holds meetings on the
second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. The second Tuesday is a
completely informal affair held at a local restaurant. The fourth
Tuesday meeting is an equally informal (but slightly less chaotic) affair
held a local business office or meeting hall.

The next STNY LUG meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 21, 1999 at
Spectra.Net in Johnson City, NY. (Address and directions below.)

Due to an oversite, no meeting topic was predetermined. However,
as we are such a bright group of individuals, I'm sure something
interesting will be dicussed.

The rest of the session will be the same old thing: laughing, eating, and
talking about all things computer, especially about Linux and Open Source
software.

Date:
Time: 7 pm

Where: Spectra.Net

=========

A new alpha version of TkDVI, a TeX DVI previewer based on Tcl/Tk, is now
available at

  ftp://www.tm.informatik.uni-frankfurt.de/pub/dist/tkdvi/

TkDVI is licensed under the same license as Tcl/Tk.

Visit the TkDVI home page on the World-Wide Web at

Have fun, and let me know how you like TkDVI!

<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Changes between versions 0.1 and 0.2:
- -------------------------------------
- - Virtual fonts are now supported. (This could use some more testing.)
- - You can switch between display modes using the `o' (overview), `s'
(single) and `d' (double-page spread) keys in addition to the menu.
- - Various bugs relating to the page selector, moving between pages
and the measuring rubber line have been fixed.
- - Various bugs in the DVI rendering engine have also been fixed.
- - The configure.in script has been made a bit more sophisticated.
In particular, you can give separate directories for Kpathsea and
the Kpathsea include files, in case the heuristic (read: guesswork)
  fails.
- - TkDVI no longer uses GNU libtool, but takes advantage of the
information in the local tclConfig.sh instead.
- - See the ChangeLog file in the distribution for more details.

Subject: COMMERCIAL: NetBeans Announces Integrations with Leading Java UML and
Debugging Vendors
Date: Sat, 19 Jun 1999 20:45:33 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

NetBeans Announces End-to-End Java Development Solution through
Integrations with Leading Java UML and Debugging Vendors

JavaOne, San Francisco, June 17th, 1999 - NetBeans announced
integrations of its Java IDE (integrated development environment)
NetBeans Developer 3.0 with Together/J 3.0 UML (Unified Modeling
Language) tool from Object International and with Metamata Debug, the
leading Java debugging environment from Metamata, Inc. Developer 3.0
is written in Java 2 and enables rapid construction of Java
applications on any Java 2 platform. Publicly available this summer,
its modular, open architecture gives developers the power to extend
their development environment with plug-in modules from NetBeans and a
wide variety of third parties.

"Developer 3.0 is the first cross-platform Java development environment
that is able to evolve along with the Java 2 platform," said Ian
Formanek, Vice President of Development at NetBeans, Inc. "Our open,
modular architecture and close partnerships with the leading Java tools
vendors gives developers the power and flexibility to construct
bleeding edge applications."

"Metamata Debug is the only Java debugger in the market capable of
running on any Java platform and attaching to and debugging Java
applications running on any Java platform," said Sriram Sankar,
President and CEO of Metamata, Inc. "With the growing use of Java for
server side and embedded applications, the unique features of Metamata
Debug together with Developer 3.0 will be a must for any Java
developer."

Peter Coad, President of Object International, said, "NetBeans
Developer 3.0 is a very clean programming environment--all of the
power, none of the clutter. Adding TJ Whiteboard brings the triad of
UML features that enterprise developers more and more insist upon:
patterns, components, and simultaneous round-trip engineering."

NetBeans Developer 3.0 is a complete Java integrated development
environment (IDE). Written in Java 2, it runs on any Java 2 enabled
platform such as Windows, Solaris, or Linux. Developer 3.0 is designed
for client-side development of Java applications and has a complete
feature set for integrated visual design, testing, editing,
compilation, and execution. The upcoming Developer 3.0 Pro powers
developers' production of database and servlet applications. Developer
3.0 Enterprise Edition merges support for EJB, CORBA, RMI, and JNDI
into a single object-oriented environment. Through wizards and
templates, Enterprise speeds up the development and deployment of
distributed applications, while the underlying object technology
automatically keeps interfaces and implementations synchronized.

Metamata Debug 1.1 is a true cross-platform network aware debugger for
any kind of Java application (standalone, applet, servlet, EJB,
embedded systems, etc.). It is capable of attaching to and debugging
Java applications running anywhere on the network. It is the only
debugger that can debug directly within any web browser, web server, or
embedded system. It can debug both JDK 1.1 and Java 2 (JDK 1.2)
applications. Other unique features of Metamata Debug include a
command line interpreter (enabling rapid prototyping), strong
multiprocess and multithread support, graphical object browsing, and
static debugging.

Together/J 3.0 is a platform-independent modeling tool that increases
productivity and effectiveness of large development organizations. It
delivers patterns, components simultaneous round-trip engineering for
Java as well as all UML 1.3 diagrams. NetBeans Enterprise will be
integrated with Together/J Whiteboard and all versions of NetBeans will
allow users to download Together/J as a plug-in module. NetBeans and
Object International will be showing the integration at JavaOne.

Fourth Issue of the "Brave GNU World", the
monthly GNU forum, is online now
                                -- Georg Greve

Hi !

The fourth issue of the "Brave GNU World" column is online
now. It can be found on the GNU Webpage and its mirrors
under

  http://www.gnu.org/brave-gnu-world/brave-gnu-world.en.html
  [ English version ]

  http://www.gnu.org/brave-gnu-world/brave-gnu-world.de.html
  [ German version ]

  http://www.gnu.org/brave-gnu-world/brave-gnu-world.fr.html
  [ French version ]

  http://www.gnu.org/brave-gnu-world/brave-gnu-world.ja.html
  [ Japanese version ]

The "Brave GNU World" is a "quadrolingual" (English, German, French and
Japanese) monthly column that provides information about internal
developments of the GNU Project and things of importance to the GNU
community, while trying to give insights into the underlying philosophy.

The German version is also printed in the "Linux Magazin", Germany's
biggest GNU/Linux magazine.

The fourth issue covers the following topics:

 * Commercial GPL Software (why use the GPL instead of the LGPL)
 * Aegis (version and development control for
                                  program development)
 * GNU Enscript (automatically formatting ASCII texts)
 * Ted (an easy Rich Text Format text processor)

This column is intended to provide a forum for all GNU maintainers,
friends and associates and I am always open to suggestions. So if
you

 * have questions about the GNU Project that might be of general
   interest

 * have a GNU Project and would like to improve its profile

 * would like to start a GNU Project you are looking for people to
   start it with

 * think something doesn't get the publicity it deserves

 * would like to see something made public

send mail to:

        "Brave GNU World <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>"

At this point would like to address _especially_ the authors of small
GPL or LGPL licensed programs that are not officially part of the GNU
Project. This column is for everyone with an interest in Free
Software and I personally like to write about those small and
relatively unknown projects.

Oh - and dont forget to spread the word... .-)

Regards,

                Georg Greve
