Subject: New Linux/MIPS crosscompilers available
Date: Fri, 2 Jul 1999 21:56:11 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

- -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Hi,

I've uploaded new patches to build native and cross binutils and compilers
for mips-linux and mipsel-linux targets for Linux/MIPS on ftp.linux.sgi.com
into /pub/linux/mips/crossdev/src/ rsp. /pub/linux/mips/crossdev/src/egcs/.

Binaries of binutils and egcs are available for the following types of
hosts are available in /pub/linux/mips/crossdev/

  - Linux/i386 (glibc 2.1 required)
  - Linux/Alpha (glibc 2.0 or newer required)
  - Linux/Sparc (glibc 2.0 or newer required)
  - Linux/PPC (glibc 2.0 or newer required)

Credits for providing the Alpha and Sparc binaries go to Arnaldo Carvalho
de Melo ([EMAIL PROTECTED]).

Please read the list of changes to the patch files and RPM packages below.

Please report problems [EMAIL PROTECTED] or one of the Linux/MIPS
mailing lists.

  Ralf

Changes to egcs since egcs 1.0.2:

 - Fixed #ident operator to generate .ident, not .string.

You must upgrade binutils to at least binutils-2.8.1-1.diff before you can
 use or build this compiler.

 You must installed this compiler release if you want to compile modutils;
previous releases were producing bad code.

Changes to binutils since version binutils-2.8.1-2.diff:

 - TLB instructions are now applied to the same instruction scheduling
   rules as other coprocessor instructions.
 - Rebuilt the binary RPM using the new patch.

You must upgrade to binutils-2.8.1-2.diff if you wish to compile Linux/MIPS
 kernels for R3000 CPUs.

Changes to binutils since version binutils-2.8.1-1.diff:

 - Fix the .ident pseudo op in gas to handle sections correctly.

You must upgrade to at least this version before you want to upgrade
 to egcs-1.0.3a.diff.

Subject: Laptop-HOWTO v1.6
Date: Fri, 2 Jul 1999 22:04:21 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hi Linuxerians,

I have just put together a new issue of the Linux-Laptop-HOWTO. I
hadn't time enough to include every suggestion I have got. BTW:
I spent some time rewriting the IR-HOWTO and finishing the first
draft of the Linux-Ecology-HOWTO.

Since the LINUX DOCUMENTATION PROJECT wasn't able to take the
document in, though I sent them the SGML source since January 1999,
you may find the document at my page

http://www.snafu.de/~wehe/index_li.html

Revision History

v1.6 26 June 1999, rewrite of APM chapter, added install method via
LapLink cable, URLs changed or added, spell checking, minor changes

I want to thank again everybody who has sent me suggestions.

ANNOUNCE: I'm planning to turn the Laptop-HOWTO into a book, because
there is much more stuff to write about.

Cheers
:-> werner

Subject: sysstat-1.2 - The sar and iostat commands for Linux
Date: Fri, 2 Jul 1999 21:50:33 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hi everybody out there using Linux,

This is to announce the release of the sysstat package version 1.2 for Linux,
containing the sar and iostat commands.
It is available on sunsite.unc.edu in the /pub/Linux/system/status directory
(27 kB sysstat-1.2.tar.gz).

The sar command collects and reports system activity information
provided by Linux via the proc filesystem. Activities are process
creation, paging, interrupts, CPU and I/O statistics among others.
These information can also be saved in a file for future inspection.

The iostat command reports CPU and I/O statistics for disks.

Note that no kernel patches are necessary for them to work.
They have been written with National Language Support in mind.
So you will need the GNU gettext package installed for this
(all the major distributions have it).

Despite its version number, sysstat-1.2 must be considered as a
BETA release, possibly with (a few ?) bugs hanging around.
It has been tested on kernels 2.0.x and 2.2.x.
I'm looking forward to getting feedback about it, so please do test it!

Hi Linuxerians,

Linux can be used as a mean to protect our environment, by using its
features to save power or paper, since it doesn't require big hardware
it may be used with old computers to make their life cycle longer,
games may be used in environmental education and software is available
to simulate ecological processes.

I have put a description of these features in the Ecology-HOWTO at
http://www.snafu.de/~wehe/index_li.html

Cheers

Subject: WANTED: Linux Knowledge Base Org. Developers
Date: Fri, 2 Jul 1999 21:52:50 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Currently there is an enormous amount of useful information about Linux on
the Internet. But, often it seems that it takes the patience of a saint
to actually find what you're looking for. Even worse, there is a lot of
inaccurate and out of date documentation which makes finding the answer
you need all the more difficult.

To solve this problem, the Linux Knowledge Base Organization
(http://www.linuxkb.org/) has been quietly working for the past eight
months to develop the most advanced information repository and retrieval
system for Linux related documentation. We are currently a six person
team dedicated to filling the documentation gap that currently exists with
Linux and the programs that run on it.

The Linux Knowledge Base Project is a volunteer effort which is 100%
sponsor supported (ie. no ad banners) and licensed in the spirit of open
source. Content can be copied, modified, and re-distributed by others
free of charge.

Currently, we are seeking additional qualified volunteers who wish to give
back to the Linux community and who share our goal of creating the most
advanced search, indexing, authoring, and management engine for Linux
related documentation.

To find out more what the Linux Knowledge Base Organization is about and
how you can help, please visit:

http://www.linuxkb.org/

Regards,
Aaron Turner <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

NCLUG, the North Colorado Linux User's Group, will have
its usual first-Tuesday-of-the-month in July: July 6,
which is the first day back at work after a three day
weekend (Independence Day) so don't let it come as a
surprise to you.

We're still meeting at Sportscaster's in Fort Collins,
from 6pm to probably something short of 8pm.

We have a guest speaker, Michael J. Hammel, author of
"The Artist's Guide to the Gimp" (SSC) and CmdrBurrito
(as it were) of TheGimp.com.

See the web page [http://www.nclug.org/] for the particulars.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

The first beta version of ecasound is now released.

Although usable, this version should be considered beta.
For instance qtecasound is still just a qt/x11 wrapper for
the textmode version. Also a lot of important documentation is still
unfinished. Feedback, bugs, problems, succesful install reports,
wishes, etc are all welcome. Send emails to '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'.

An example of what ecasound can do:

Process a input file (wav, mp3, cdr) with a resonant lowpass
filter. The cutoff frequency is controlled by a sine oscillator.
The effect processing is done in realtime and the output is sent
to /dev/dsp (OSS drivers are used):

"ecasound somefile.mp3 -ef3:800,1.5,0.9 -kos:1,400,4200,0.2,0"

Title: ecasound
Version: 1.1.5r2
Entered-date: 01JUL1999
Description: Ecasound is a text-mode sound processing program that
can do various tasks from basic editing and effect
processing to multitrack recording. Although the user
interface may seem a bit cryptic, one of the main
design goals of this project has been to create an
easy-to-use, creative utility for recording and mixing
purposes. Because of the simple interface, batch files
can be used to automate complex editing tasks. qtecasound
                - a Qt and X11 based GUI - is also included.
