Strace 4.0 has been released!

Since the last major release (version 3.1) a lot of things have
changed. This release should work on most Linux architectures
(it was tested on i386, alpha, sparc, m68k and powerpc), SunOS,
Solaris and (some versions of) IRIX. Of course we've also added
a lot of new system calls and fixed a nice number of bugs.

A couple of popular features are not supported yet (most noticably
proper clone() support for Linux). Now that strace 4.0 has been
released we can work on adding new features.

Please read the global README and the README for your OS when you
compile strace!

For Linux there are now also a couple of kernel patches available at
the strace homepage that make strace usage a bit more pleasant.

If you have questions, remarks or patches you can send those to the
strace mailinglist. You can subscribe by sending an email with the subject
"subscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can post to the list by
sending mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

You can get strace at two locations:
 * homepage at http://www.wi.leidenuniv.nl/~wichert/strace/
 * CVS archive at :pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvs/strace,
   password is empty

Wichert.

Subject: COMMERCIAL: Fastest chipsets, new support for Accelerated-X.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Xi Graphics has completed updates adding new desktop support for the
Matrox G400, 3dfx/STB Voodoo3-2000 and 3000, the Diamond Viper 770 Ultra
(nVidia Riva TNT2) and Diamond viper 550 (TNT) and adding the portable
computers HP Omnibook XE, Hitachi M120D, CTX EZBook 700G.

The fastest graphics board supported by Accelerated-X is now the Matrox
G400. The following benchmarks were obtained on a K6-II at 450MHz; we
expect that a Pentium processor clocking at the same speed will be
faster
as it can use MTRR which is not present in the K6-II support.

        TNT2 = Diamond Viper 770 Ultra
        TNT = Diamond Viper 550
        Voodoo3 = Voodoo3-3000

Xmark'93                8bpp            16bpp           24bpp
                1280x1024@85Hz  1280x1024@75Hz  1024x768@65Hz

Xaccel 5.0
Matrox G400 (16MB)      53              44              40
TNT2                    47              38              32
TNT                     43              35              30
Voodoo3                 47              41              35

An Xmark exceeding 40 usually means that opaque window moves are very
smooth at any resolution, the only visible glitching being caused by
other processes demanding lots of CPU or bus.

We were able to find support for the Diamond Viper 500 in XFree86 and
Xmetro. We were unable to make any other X servers work with the other
chips, even if support was claimed. XFree86 does not claim to support
24bpp color depth, so no benchmark was collectable.

        Diamond Viper 500 (nVidia Riva TNT)
Xmark'93                8bpp            16bpp           24bpp

Xaccel 5                43              35              30
XF86_SVGA 3.3.3.1       13              10              n/a
Xmetro                  6.8             4.9             4.1

Note that 2D support does not imply support for 3D hardware
acceleration. It is currently unlikely that either the Matrox G400 or
any 3dfx chips will be supported by the initial release of our hardware
accelerated OpenGL products. The fastest 3D chips in the lab are
currently the S3 Savage3D and AccelGraphics AccelGALAXY (E&S realImage).

The updates are at URL:

        ftp://ftp.xig.com/pub/updates/accelx/desktop/5.0/intel/

====
Portable computers

HP Omnibook XE

The HP Omnibook XE (Silicon Motion SM810 chipset) is supported by an
update to the Laptop Accelerated-X Display Server version 5. The
SM810 was benchmarked in the HP system at full resolution on the LCD
panel:

Xmark'93        8bpp            16bpp           24bpp
Xaccel 5        13              10              8

Even in 8bpp this will be a slow display by comparison with current
desktops and leading portable computers (e.g. ATI Rage LT Pro gets
double the Xmark rating in the Fujitsu Lifebook 990TX2). We recommend
disabling opaque window moves. We were unable to find released or Work
In Progress support for the Silicon Motion chips, so we are unable to
publish comparison benchmarks.

The update is available from URL:

        ftp://ftp.xig.com/pub/updates/accelx/laptop/5.0/L5000.013.tar.gz

and a text description is in:

        ftp://ftp.xig.com/pub/updates/accelx/laptop/5.0/L5000.013.txt

Hitachi M120-D

This portable uses the Cirrus Logic 7543 chip with 1MB graphics memory.
We were unable to test this machine at full screen resolution in 24bpp.

Xmark'93        8bpp
Xaccel 5        1.5

This will be a very slow display to use. We recommend disabling opaque
window moves and avoiding any applications that require fast updates
such as MPEG playback. Both MetroLink and XFree86 XF86_SVGA 3.3.3.1
claim to support this chip. We were unable to configure this display to
provide any visible support so no benchmarks could be taken.

The update is available from URL:

        ftp://ftp.xig.com/pub/updates/accelx/laptop/5.0/L5000.014.tar.gz

and a text description is in:

        ftp://ftp.xig.com/pub/updates/accelx/laptop/5.0/L5000.014.txt

CTX EZBook 700G

This uses the Cyrix MediaGX chip with 1MB graphics memory. We were
unable to test this machine at full resolution in 24bpp.

Xmark'93        8bpp            16bpp
Xaccel 5        6.7             5.0

This will also be rather sluggish to display, but should be clearly
visibly faster than the Hitachi M120-D. We recommend disabling opaque
window moves and avoiding applications that need fast screen updates.
Both MetroLink and XFree86 XF86_SVGA 3.3.3.1 claim to support this
chip. We were unable to configure a reliable and visible display so
benchmark comparison is not possible.

The update is available from URL:

        ftp://ftp.xig.com/pub/updates/accelx/laptop/5.0/L5000.015.tar.gz

and a text description is in:

        ftp://ftp.xig.com/pub/updates/accelx/laptop/5.0/L5000.015.txt

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hi all,

on behalf of the Bluefish development team I would like to announce the
first public release of the Bluefish HTML editor.

Bluefish is a programmers HTML editor, designed to save the experienced
webmaster some keystrokes. It features a multiple file editor, multiple
toolbars, custom menu's, image and thumbnail dialogs, open from the web,
HTML validation and lots of wizards. It is in continous development, but
already one of the better HTML editors.

This release includes lots of features, especially for dynamic HTML,
improved editor framework, lots of small bugfixes, tearable menu's with
all the possible options, and lots, lots more. See the ChangeLog for
full details.

Bluefish requires GTK and Imlib is recommended. Bluefish should run on
any POSIX (UNIX-like) platform. For general Bluefish comments the email
adres [EMAIL PROTECTED] can be contacted. For more info
please visit the website at http://bluefish.linuxbox.com/

        The Bluefish development team.
