New York Linux Users Group August Meeting

 ******** THEODORE T'SO -- PROLIFIC LINUX KERNEL HACKER ********

Wed. 8/18/99
6:30-9pm
IBM Building
590 Madison Avenue (at 57th St.)
check in at lobby for badge and room number

Theodore is one of the core Linux kernel developers, having started using
Linux back in 1991, during the days of the 0.10 kernel. Theodore Ts'o has
over the years written, rewritten, or supported Posix Job Control, the
high level tty driver, the serial driver, the ramdisk support,
e2fsck/e2fsprogs, and other bits and pieces of code in and near the
kernel.

This is how LINUS refers to Ted in the CREDITS FILE:

        N: Theodore Ts'o
        E: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
        D: Random Linux hacker
D: Maintainer of tsx-11.mit.edu ftp archive
        D: Maintainer of c.o.l.* Usenet<->mail gateway
        D: Author of serial driver
D: Author of the new e2fsck
D: Author of job control and system call restart code
D: Author of ramdisk device driver
D: Author of loopback device driver

Ted is currently leading the development team at MIT working on Kerberos,
a distributed network security protocol used on the Internet. He is also
responsible for the tty drivers and the serial layer _and_ the maintainer
of the e2fsprogs utilities package for the ext2 filesystem _and_ the
maintainer of the tsx-11.mit.edu ftp server. AND he's also the author and
maintainer of the Rocketport intelligent serial board. Ted also works at
VA Linux Systems on technical stuff.

Ted is a member of the Internet Engineering Task Force, where currently
serves on the Security Area Directorate, helping to shape the security
architecture for the Internet. He also serves as a working group co-
- -chair for the ONC RPC and IP Security working groups and is a member of
the Common Authentication Technology working group. Ted is also currently
a member of the Technical Board of Linux International. Ted also works at
VA Linux Systems on some technical stuff.

.... and then I learned how he reversed engineered the Palm Pilot...

"An application for the Pilot is simply a Pilot resource database
with a number of mandatory resources (CODE0, CODE1, DATA0, PREFO
etc.) The PRC file, then, is simply the flat file representation
        of a Pilot resource database."

"Up until now, there really hasn't been a public documentation
of the PRC format. This was was frustrating for me since I wanted
to write a BFD backend for PRC executables."

"This document is my attempt to rectify this situation."

http://www.mit.edu/afs/athena.mit.edu/user/t/y/tytso/www/pilot/index.html

OH MAN... I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT HE WANTS TO TALK ABOUT! It's probably
a safe bet that it will be rather technical. Please join us!

Yes, it can also play itself! No predesigned scenario: tiles fall in
random order, as usually.

As another exclussive feature, ITETRIS allows to play your favourite
tunes changing with level. You can nominate a music player (MOD, MIDI,
etc) and music file for each level, or spread it across several
consecutive levels.

Has original design, bottom shadow, keeps list of top scores. Takes
advantage of colours but works in 16colour mode as well. You will
appreciate that, it your video card is not supported or badly supported
by svgalib or X-server. Provides a special video mode (640x350) for an
EGA card (patch for svgalib is needed) Optional joystick support
through a Linux driver.

Platforms: svgalib-1.2.10+ or X11. No additional library required!

                  | Eridani Star System announces: |
                  `--------------------------------'

Eridani CDROM with Red Hat 6.0 -----> 3.00 each.
         Linux-Mandrake 6.0 -----------------> 3.00 each.
         Debian GNU/Linux 2.1 2CDROM set ----> 5.00 per set.
Red Hat Powertools 6.0 -------------> 3.00 each. [NEW]
Eridani CDROM with Red Hat 5.2 -----> 3.00 each.
         Red Hat Powertools 5.2 -------------> 3.00 each.
         Linux-Mandrake 5.3 -----------------> 3.00 each.

The install CDROMs include an El Torito boot record, which, on supported
hardware make them bootable.

The Red Hat 6.0 CDs are made to order, and as such, will have all the Red
Hat updates to that time on the CD. Rather than having them in a separate
updates directory, we have opted to make them part of the install, so you
automatically have an up-to-date Linux system.

A large amount of extra software has been included on the CDROM, including
Corel WordPerfect (downloadable version) and Sun JDK 1.1.7 (for the
programmers out there). Also now included are xawtv and alevt (for bttv-based
TV cards), VNC, SANE (scanner driver software), Speak Freely 7 and SSH 1.2.27.
Note this is not an exhaustive list!

A second CD is available, which contains all the source code. Red Hat
Linux is just too big now to have all the binaries and sources on the one
CD. This CD is also available, also for UKP 3.00.

The Debian CD set is the Official Debian GNU/Linux 2.1 (slink) 2CD
distribution.

The Mandrake CDs are based on a Mandrake-sourced master.

For more information, and how to order, please visit the web page at:

        http://www.amush.cx/linux/

International orders accepted, but due to the cost of bank charges and
international mail, the prices will be slightly higher.

Sorry, we cannot accept credit cards. Cash (Pounds sterling preferred!)
and cheques drawn on a UK bank. International bank transfers accepted,
however subject to a UKP 2.00 charge due to bank charges. There is a
UKP 1.50 charge for postage and packaging for up to 2 CDs within the UK,
variable for international customers.

Sorry in advance if this might come across as spam - I've been a
Usenet anti-spammer for many years. I have pushed hard to get
Linux into classrooms and I believe deeply that it is the OS of
the future - today. I have been a huge believer in Linux for a
long time and I am very proud to help in popularizing it further.

I've written a Linux System Administration course for delivery by
my employer, Learnix Limited. This is a one week course designed
to welcome new or moderately experienced System Administrators
into the world of power Linux usage in the corporate environment.
My next project is an Advanced Linux System Administration
course.

I am proud to announce that our Linux System Administration
course is ready for students across Canada and in California, and
is scheduled for first deliveries in September, depending on your
location. Custom locations across North America are possible with
advance notice.

Learnix is a company with years of experience delivering courses
under contract for major computer companies - I personally teach
Solaris SysAdmin for Sun Microsystems and HP-UX SysAdmin for
Hewlett Packard.

If this is of any interest to you, give us a call, or forward

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

PNF is a suck-like tool, written in perl, to get news articles
for a small news spool. Version 0.3 came out late summer of 1997.
Since then a number of new features have been added and general
improvements made.

- From the WHATSNEW file:

What's new in version 0.41.

Code and documentation for a relatively easy scheme to permit posting
on your local INN server while offline, then unattended reposting of the
articles on your remote server. This is the main reason for 0.41. Some
other documentational improvements.

What's new in version 0.4.

Documentation! Actual .pods for pnf and some support utilities.

Persistent 'seen' hash. PNF can now remember articles it has seen in
different runs, giving a 'history' effect. Handy for re-runs and runs
to different news servers.

Better eval of killfiles (and filters). Syntax restrictions disappear
thereby.

The feature to end all features, filtering. You can write arbitrary
perl code that sees the whole article to make filtering decisions.
A mondo spam filter based on Jeremy Nixon's CleanFeed is included.

Replacement of non-(son of)rfc1036 or iso8859 characters in articles.
Your text based newsreader is finally safe from getting clobbered by
losing news software.

User specifiable timeout value.

Bug fixes.

- From the README:

[...]

PNF was a semi-regularly tended collection of features for its
environment: Linux, INN controlling a small spool for one user and a
dial-up 28800 connection. Late in the fall of 1996, PNF began to look
like a way to repay in kind our software community with a contribution
of my own, and dare I say it, gain fame and glory, or perhaps notoriety
and opprobrium, if only its existence could be justified. Therefore, of
course, more features were added.

PNF now does more or less what suck does, plus some other things that
may
give it reason to exist beyond its current home. It can send articles
directly to an NNTP server through IHAVE, avoiding intermediate storing
and batching. It can pipe an rnews batch to a program, say,
pnews_expand
from Jim Buchanan's pnews package, again avoiding storing. [...]
Finally, and most telling I think, it's written in Perl! :-)
