Subject: SIMPL v1.2 - Send/Receive/Reply messaging scheme
Date: Wed, 15 Sep 1999 22:37:41 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

The SIMPL project (www.holoweb.net/~simpl) is dedicated to bringing a
simple Send/Receive/Reply messaging scheme (first popularized by OS's
such as QNX) to the Open Source Linux community.

The base version for the SIMPL project has been upgraded to v1.2

The significant new enhancement with v1.2 is that the SIMPL messaging
paradigm has now been extended to work transparently across TCP/IP
sockets.

This is completely an open source project. The source is free to be
used as you see fit. We welcome any contributions or enhancements to
this code base.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

   Subject: ANNOUNCE: Linux.be - http://linux.iguana.be/
     _________________________________________________________________

   Dear Linux friends,

Linux.be is a Belgian nonprofit organization (``VZW/ASBL''), that wants to
offer structure and visibility to all Linux and Open Source activities
in Belgium. Behind the screens, we have been preparing a website, with
information and links for the whole range of interested people, from
the absolute beginner to the decision taker in a large company. We
want to complement the Linux User Groups in Belgium, by taking care of
common organisational issues, and by serving as a central point of
reference. The latter function is mainly important to promote Linux
and Open Source with companies, schools, and national and regional
political bodies (Education, Culture, Science, etc.).

The ``linux.be'' domain name had, unfortunately, already been taken at
the moment we applied for it. The current owner has shown large
reluctance to cooperate, except on his own terms. These, however, are
unacceptable to us, because they differ too much from the unselfish
tradition of the worldwide Open Source community: Linux.be wants to be
a transparant organisation, supported by unpaid volunteers. We have
tried several times to persuade the current owner to transfer the
domain, but failed. In addition, we waited to see whether he could
fulfill his claims to build a full-fledged Linux portal site serving
the needs of the Belgian Linux community. We waited in vain.
Therefore, we decided not to wait any longer, and launch the linux.be
website now, even with a URL that is less than satisfactory:

   http://linux.iguana.be/

Until now, Linux.be has been the work of a small number of
individuals, but we do not wish to keep a monopoly on the content of
the website. On the contrary. In the best Open Source tradition, we
welcome inputs from all volunteers, on any level. The website contains
the details on the many ways you can contribute. Please, accept our
   invitation to do so.

The website wants to be ``Belgian,'' and hence provides room for
french, german and dutch versions, in order to get people started in
their own language. An english version exists too, which is mainly
targeted to the more advanced users. We do not aim to keep the
different language versions completely synchronised all the time,
because each language has its own focus of interest, and contributors
   with different skills and backgrounds.

Linux.be is certainly not the first initiative to promote Open Source:
organisations such as LinBel (http://linbel.iguana.be/) and
linuxbe.org (http://linuxbe.org/) paved the way. Both of them are
currently backing our efforts, and contributing significantly. In
addition, cooperations with the dutch initiative nl.linux.org
(http://nl.linux.org/) are already taking place. This boosts our
confidence that we will be able to rely on a solid basis of
   collaborators.

We explicitly want to express our gratitude towards Iguana, because
their effective support has allowed us to make Linux.be into what (we
hope) it is now: a central and open body that serves the complete
   Belgian Open Source community.

But the final word is always yours, the user: we provide information
and means to cooperate, in the hope that they fill your needs. If they
don't, please let us know how we should improve them. Together, we can
   go a long way!
     _________________________________________________________________

   Sincere and enthusiastic Linux greetings,

Birt Baus, Pascal Bleser, Herman Bruyninckx, Kris Carlier, Ivo

Schrijver, Alan Empain, Machtelt Garrels, Daniel Lucq, Ignis

Hellug, the Hellenic Linux Users Group, will be one
of the exhibitors in the Infosystem 99 expo, in the
city of Thessaloniki, Greece, from Thursday 7 to
Monday 10 October 1999. Infosystem is the most
important information technology show in Greece and
has been organised with success for the past 13 years
at the premises of the International Trade Fair of
Thessaloniki.

In Hellug's stand, we will

- - present the rapidly growing operating system that
began as a project of a few programmers and was
adopted by millions of computer users around the world

- - setup computers running applications for servers,
workstations and PCs

- - explain the robustness and flexibility of Linux to
people who are not familiar with it

- - answer new users' questions on installing and using
Linux

- - elaborate on the potential use of Linux in different
contexts, ranging from the academic to the corporate
environment

- - introduce companies that promote Linux oriented
software in Greece

- - give away CDs with distributions of the OS (Red Hat,
Suse, etc.), posters, leaflets, and, generally,
material that will help make Linux more popular

- - give the chance to old and new users to meet each
other and exchange views on their favorite OS

We invite all Linux fans, as well as everyone who is
interested in information technology, to visit
Pavilion 15, Stand 12 (12.00 - 21.00 weekdays, 11.00
- - 22.00 during the weekend) so that we know each
other better, discuss, have fun, and give fresh
impetus to the dissemination of the Free Software
philosophy in Greece.

Date: Wed, 15 Sep 1999 22:41:56 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

The latest development version of cdctl 0.14 is out.

cdctl is a program to control your cdrom drive under Linux. Right now it
does everything that a command-line audio player can do, as well as
capability readback, tray locking, software autoeject, table of contents
header readback, and much more.

Please download it and see if it works on your system. The more people that
try it, the better it gets!

We are also looking for people to localize cdctl to different languages.
This development release has the i18n infrastructure built, and a few German
messages in the message catalog. Other localizations are underway. If you
speak a foreign language and know how to say "cdrom" in it, you're
qualified!

You can get cdctl at http://host30.frys.com/cdctl/cdctl-devel.tar.gz. The
digital signatures are at
http://host30.frys.com/cdctl/cdctl-devel.tar.gz.sig.
