The fragmentation (at least from my experience), is largely due to any
improper shutdowns... EXT2 is an extremely nice file system that doesn't
fragment like some others I can think of. There's a nice little program
out there called defrag-0.73 (I believe- I haven't checked for updates in
a while), which will defragment ext2/ext/xiafs filesystems.
A note of caution- you need to run e2defrag (the EXT2 version of the
defragmenter) on unmounted partitions ONLY. If you run it on mounted
partitions (and it's in READ-WRITE mode), it can and will destroy your
filesystem. It is recommended to run it from a boot disk.
I have used this program many times and it is an excellent program. I
recommend it to anyone whose filesystem has a little fragmentation ( >
3.0% ...from personal experience my system after normal use usually has a
small amount of fragmentation)
