I had the same problem. There is a utility called w2txt or something,
which is supposed to get the text out of MS-Word documents, but it's less
than perfect.
A better solution is to set up wine and get Wordview, a freeware
program from Microsoft. Then set up the MIME list for
"application/MS-Word" as "wine wordview %s" and you're set. (Actually I
think I had to set up a small script file - maybe cd to the wordview
directory)
