I use a small scritp to start quakeworld client
#!/bin/sh
/usr/bin/gpm -k # kill gpm
/usr/local/games/quake/qwcl2.3 -nocdaudio -mdev /dev/cua0
# have qwcl v 2.21, 2.3 all in quake dir jsut different names
# -mdev to set your mouse if /etc/vga/libvga.config dose not work
# for you
