More generally, get a copy of xv 3.01 or so. With the latest release
(3.10a), the author decided that the man page was too unwieldy and
simply stopped shipping it :-( The docs are now in a large PostScript
file (probably in /usr/doc/xv* on your system). The man page supplied
with the older versions listed all the command line options. The PS
docs are just too unwieldy to use online.
Anyway, the important part is the number after the -rmode option:
0 tiling
1 integer tiling
2 mirrored tiling
3 integer mirrored tiling
4 centered tiling
5 centered on a solid background
6 centered on a `warp' background
7 centered on a `brick' background
8 symmetrical tiling
9 mirrored symmetrical tiling
The -quit is important, too, otherwise you'll leave an xv process
running after the background is set.
Hope this helps...
