   I use xv. I have a cron job that, every hour that I'm in the office,
downloads the latest satellite image and displays it in the root window.
The xv command is: xv -wait 5 -root <file>

Here's the shell script (I call it getsat):

cd /usr/comm/weather
mv /usr/comm/weather/latest_g9ir.gif /usr/comm/weather/latest_g9ir.gif.old

if (/usr/bin/ncftp satellite:/pub/data/g9/latest_g9ir.gif) then
  /usr/bin/X11/xv -display :0.0 -expand 0.9:0.75 -root -wait 5 \
/usr/comm/weather/latest_g9ir.gif
fi
