first of all, the newest mpg123 version does include control_generic, so no
patch is needed anymore.

did you try the (new) irmp3 version 0.4.x ? there are mayor changes since
0.3.x, especially in coding style. it has a modularized source and should
allow to do what you want. have a look at the file DEVELOPER which describes
the programming style and how to add new features.
