Damaged tar.gz file

hi all
i've backed up my users home directories while upgrading the system
but unfortunately the tar.gz file has been damage now i want to recover
the users datas, how can i do this? any suggestions...

ps: i've tried fixtar but i think it didn't worked or i don't know how to
use it.
