I haven't tried it - but I read some positive discussion regarding QCAD
in a mailing list recently.

Definitely... you can use ppp over serial ports look at
/usr/doc/HOWTO/PPP-HOWTO

You can also use PLIP over parallel port connections see "PLIP" - look
at NET-3-HOWTO section 9.2-ish...

Also try "grep -i..." for various relevant keywords on files in the
/usr/doc/HOWTO and /usr/doc/HOWTO/mini directories....

I haven't tried the direct cabled connections myself (although I use ppp
extensively over a serial modem) - but they should work pretty much the
same way...

Also, depending on your constraints, budget, etc... you might want to
consider inexpensive network cards.  I just picked up a NetGear FA310
base-10/100 network card - cost was about U$25.00  (of course you would
need 2 and some cables).
