You should be able to do this with joe's config file. (I'm not a joe user, I'm a hard-core vim user from way, way back). man termcap man terminfo man xterm man xmodmap man bash man joe (just for a start... check the "SEE ALSO" sections that these refer to). Thanks! Yes, it can be "fixed". In fact, it is possible to totally reconfigure your keyboard at the kernel, shell, console/terminal, and X levels. All of them. Which makes this issue rather messy to deal with. I don't dare attempt here to fill you in on all the nitty-gritty details of how to go about tweaking things the way you want.
