Something seems to be wrong with your getty. Have a look at /etc/inittab
which program acts as a getty and check that it is working correctly. You
could also try to look at /var/log/messages to see if your getty program
exits abnormally (something like segfaults or the like).
To do all this, try dropping into a shell at bootup using the kernel
command line "init=<path_to_your_shell>" (without quotes of course).
