Funny... I had an Assabet that did *exactly* the same thing a long time
ago. However, I had another later model (phase 4) that worked fine with
the same kernel image and CF Ethernet card. I _suspect_ this is another
case of wimpy power supply syndrome or other hardware issue on early
Assabets. The solution is, as you discovered, wait until init finishes
then insert the card.
What if your filesystem is NFS root mounted you ask? Well, now we have
to be a little more nimble- As soon as the initrd begins to decompress
you'll have about a 1 second window in which to insert the card. Once
the ramdisk is in place and init begins, it will find the network
device. Trust me, with a little practice, you'll get quite good at this
;-)
