It might be a couple of things:

- Wrong output format (endianness, 8 bit vs. 16 bit, signed vs. unsigned)
- Wrong device (/dev/audio instead of /dev/dsp)
- Too many floating point instructions (which are emulated in kernel
  and slow down the player)

You might try madplay, it works quite good on StrongARM CPUs:
