What exactly do you mean by 'nanowm seems to work but nothing happens' ?
When i run nanowm, it just turns my screen green - i don't see anything
else. After starting nanowm, you can start up other applications, and
these should write interesting stuff to screen. Incidently, you can just
run the demos without nanowm, provided you are happy to just have one
full screen window.
