But editing the .config file manually followed 
by a "make oldconfig" should work, as it wroten
in the README file (line 126):

        "make oldconfig"   Default all questions based on the contents of
                           your existing ./.config file.


I know that "make menuconfig" or "make xconfig" may always be
safer and less problems, but sometimes it easier to find a 
specific "CONFIG_XXX" editing the .config manually.

Why did you hand edit the .config file?

It is not sufficient to merely edit this file to change the configuration
of the kernel.  This is more than likely your problem.  Follow the
instructions in the README and everything will work.
