There's also pocketlinux, http://www.pocketlinux.org, which uses a jvm 
that was branched from kaffe a little (?) while ago. There are binaries 
available for the iPAQ, but if you need to use the display on your 
Assabet, you'll need to build a jvm from source. When i stopped keeping 
an eye om it a few months ago, many people (including me) had tried to 
get the pocketlinux vm to build from source for a StrongARM, and none 
had succeeded. With luck, things may have changed since then...
