I have never seen that pump actually managed to get any address at all,
but that's another story. (no thank you, I'm not interested in "it
works for me" stories)

dhcpd is the server, you want dhclient. If that's too heavy, have a
look at the client in udhcp (haven't tried it, looks sweet. see
http://udhcp.busybox.net/ ).
