Well, any kernel prior to 2.4.18-rmk1 has NWFPE problems that could cause this weird behaviour. However, you say the Acorn FPE behaves similarly, which is really interesting. I wonder if you're getting a signal around there, and somehow f4 is getting corrupted by that handler.
