I might be able to shed some more light on the problem. I've now
converted cranberry to use nbd for swap (hence /dev/nd0), and put
the appropriate commands at the top of rc.sysinit. Problem is, it's
never getting there (as evidenced by my `echo' command).

If I `tcpdump host cranberry' from inkvine, I get a flurry of NFS
activity, `INIT: version 2.64 booting' appears on cranberry's console,
and then after a brief pause:

    21:52:37.802611 cranberry.wincoll.ac.uk > inkvine.wincoll.ac.uk:
icmp: ip reassembly time exceeded [tos 0xc0]

where inkvine is the NFS server concerned. What is this telling me?
My NFS server is up the creek..?

After this occurs, cranberry is still perfectly pingable, and will
happily generate ECONNREFUSED errors.
