Yeah, this was historically the reason that the .init stuff didn't work
terribly well. There are still a few problems there even with all the patches
applied but it seems more productive to focus on fixing the mainline gas2 in
time for the next major release rather than trying to make 2.9 any better,
given that it works for most people most of the time at the moment.
