For a direct drive printer all the emulations have to be provided in
software. The unit itself literally contains just the print engine.
The engines are relatively standard and easy to obtain documentation for. I
think CC used Qume and Canon parts. The hard part from the point of view of
writing a driver would be the controlling podule. Acorn's early LBP podules
used VIDC chips to output the scan data but I don't know if others did the
same or used some other scheme.
