This does seem to work now, at least in a quick test.  I needed a couple more 
patches which I've sent to the gdb-patches list.

Incidentally, to further address the original question, the ARM simulator 
that's packaged with GDB only supports little endian as far as I can see.  I 
don't think it would be that hard to add bi-endian support if someone wanted 
to make a patch; if a simulator were available it would probably be easier 
to do something about the sorry state of support for big-endian targets.
