Definitely.
Might have something to do with this.

Yes and no. The emulation mentioned in the announcement is a library (libsalsa) that emulates a subset of ALSA-lib.

The Cuckoo project announced on the above link is kernel based and not emulation. It makes the low level drivers of OSS to look like native ALSA drivers to the snd/snd-pcm modules (probably the same could be made in the opposite direction too). Cuckoo (sources) is shipped with OSS v4 but it doesn't get loaded by default.

We are actually looking for volunteer maintainers both for libsalsa and Cuckoo (emulating ALSA is not our key business and our resources are limited). If you are interested then please contact me.

Btw, there is some info available for developers that was not mentioned in the original announcement:

o http://developer.opensound.com/oss4white.pdf is a white paper about changes in OSS v4 for application programmers. o http://manuals.opensound.com/developer/ contains the OSS v4 Programmer's Manual. o There is a new oss-devel mailing list for OSS developers. See http://mailman.opensound.com/mailman/listinfo/oss-devel for more info.
