How do I play the AWE64 synth with my MIDI keyboard? I have searched
Usenet and the Web for hours and have seen this question asked several
times but never satisfactorily answered.

I can use 'rosegarden' to record MIDI tracks from my keyboard, I can use
'playmidi -e' to play .mid files to the MIDI keyboard, and I can use
'playmidi' or 'drvmidi' to play .mid files to the AWE64 synth, but I
cannot figure out how to route the input from the MIDI keyboard in real
time back out to the AWE64 synth. Can this be done?

I have just started looking at the 'Jazz' sequencer, and that looks
promising (it seems to support a "MIDI thru" setting) but I have two
objections to this approach:

        1) Jazz does not seem to work with the latest devel kernel
           (2.1.131) because /dev/music and /dev/sequencer2 are
now obsolete. So far, I have not been able to figure
out what they have been superceded by. I am assuming
           /dev/sequencer. However, simply symlinking /dev/music
to /dev/sequencer does not appear to work.

        2) Jazz is non-free software. Although I will use a non-
free solution if no free solution exists, free software
is certainly my preference. Also, it seems like overkill
to go with a package like Jazz when I already have
Rosegarden, and the only feature I want from Jazz is
           the midi thru.

Can anyone shed some illumination on this matter? It would be a shame if
I had to resort to Win/95, especially since the AWE64 is in my gateway
system which I do not like to reboot into Win/95 if at all possible.
Furthermore, swapping the AWE64 into the other system (which is more
frequently booted into Win/95) would mean sacrificing the extra processing
power that I want in my "music box" (the other system is a P100, and the
present system with the AWE64 is an AMD K6-2/300).
