Might I just clarify that, while this book I mentioned above does have an entire
chapter devoted to sockets, the book itself covers a very wide range of topics
related to programing in Linux/Unix. It essentially covers everything from
simple bourne/bash shell proramming, through memory management,  processes,
sockets, etc. The book serves to lay a solid foundation with respect to a wide
variety of Unix programming tasks, from which the reader can move on to more
advanced, detailed discussions on a specific topic. Keep this in mind for if you
are undertaking an advanced programming project involving some of the topics
that you mention above then perhaps an advanced text devoted specifically
towards network programming under Unix may suit you better. This is not to say
that the text I mentioned above is not a very good text. In any event, you can
go to theoir website and check out the description of the book and decide if it
suits your needs. Good Luck...
