Both you and David bring up some good points. I agree with what you've
written, but I'm hesitant in adopting some blanket approach to moderating
the list. I think that common sense should rule out. If there is a
tricky question or a misunderstanding about Linux (not necessarily C
even), then I think that it is fair game to send it to the list. If a
question is extremely basic or off-topic, then it shouldn't be sent
to this mailing list.
Obviously the "hazing" that I advocated was a joke -- blame my warped blend of
deprecative humour for that (don't worry, I use self-deprecative humour
as well).
However, that all said, "what is a global variable?", is an incredibly
basic question. Someone shouldn't use this list as a "Teach yourself C
(from scratch) in 21 Days".
