you need to do this because it tells your shell (the thing that you type
commands into) to look in the current directory (which is '.'), this
isn't included in your path statement (tells your shell where to look
for executable files) for security reasons (if you're root and some nasty
person has written a 'modified' version of 'ls' and it's in your current
dir, you would run that instead of the proper one). If you're the only
person on your computer and it has no network connections then it's probably
OK to add it (look in .profile, or /etc/profile).
