Programs failing with messages that at first led me to suspect fs/disk problems. After many hours of analysis and searching the news groups it turnrd out to be problems with my simm memory modules. You need to look for any and all info that can reduce the "search space" for the cause. Check the system log and any other log files that might be related. If you can reproduce the problem strace out put can be very helpful. If there are no other exceptions at exactly the same time as problem you are analyzing expanding the time window around the event might document a pattern.
